Police swoop down on mat rempit race in KL; 391 ticketed

KUALA LUMPUR: Police issued 391 compounds in an operation on mat rempits at Jalan Raja Laut here yesterday.

The operation, which began at 9.30pm and finished at 11.45pm, swooped down on an illegal race routine which the mat rempits had shifted to Sunday nights.

City Traffic chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nadzri Hussain said the mat rempits usually converged on Friday and Saturday nights, but had recently begun holding activities on Sundays, possibly in an effort to avoid the police's regular operations on them.

The compounds were issued for various offences, including riding without licence (58 summonses), expired license (42), fancy number plate (56) and plate numbers not complying with standard requirement (20).

Police also arrested a man believed to have been involved in the theft of a motorcycle in Sentul.

Nadzri said police will continue to conduct operations against mat rempits to keep the city centre free from illegal races.

Mat Rempit is a Malaysian term for "an individual who participates in immoral activities and public disturbance with a motorcycle as their main transport", usually involving underbone motorcycles, colloquially known as Kapcai, or scooters.
