Songkran Water Festival is a new year festival that will be celebrated annually on 13th of April. The Thai citizens will splash water to each other as a form of blessing and it is normally celebrated for three days. People are allowed to splash water on the Buddha statues as a symbol of purification and washing of unfortunates. This three-day splash festival has been well-known as the world’s biggest water fight.
In the past annual celebrations, there are cases claiming that ladies who went for the festival was indecently assaulted, the victims included tourists. Therefore, the splash festival for this year will be subject to enforce the restrictions and regulations from authorities.
In order to prevent these similar cases from repeating during the festival celebration, the Thailand authority, Song Pong has announced that the splash festival will be strictly managed with fine punishment. People who publicly commit indecent acts such as women who are showing obscenity publicly during the splash festival will be strictly fine with a total amount of 5,000 Thai Baht (approximately RM 641).
Therefore, the Thai authorities hope that the public and tourists who are going to celebrate for the splash festival would dress appropriately to avoid any mishaps. Besides, applying white powder is also prohibited during the splash festival. It was explained to avoid ones taking the opportunity to molest the girls.
For the tools that will be used for water splashing, the people are prohibited to use the high-pressure water gun to prevent injuries. Shops and bars on Khao San Road and surrounding areas have also been asked to close early during the Songkran period.
However, the celebrations of Songkran for this year will be toned down for the mourning of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who passed away in October 2016.
