7,000 Birds Recovered in Massive Cockfighting Raid in California and into the cooking pot

by DANIELLA SILVA

California authorities seized about 7,000 birds this week in what they said was the largest raid of illegal cockfighting in U.S. history.

The animals were recovered from an alleged cockfighting operation after a months-long investigation that culminated in a raid on Monday at a remote property in northern Los Angeles County, authorities said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"This, according to the experts here, is the largest seizure in U.S. history of illegal cockfighting roosters," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Capt. Jeff Perry said at the press conference.

The operation, which involved about 100 personnel, also led to the seizure of firearms, illegal narcotics, "mobile fighting pits," "hundreds of slashers," and syringes and steroids for the birds, Perry said.

Authorities also found "several dead roosters with wounds consistent with cockfighting," he said.

Perry said the property where the operation was found was "very large" and "in a remote location in a canyon."

Law enforcement on horseback aided in the bust, he said, as some of the suspects at the scene "tried to run up through the canyons," from which there were no roads accessible by vehicle.

They detained about 10 people at the scene, most of which Perry said were "lower level" workers at the operation, including animal caretakers.

Authorities have identified the property's owner and he "is the primary suspect in the case," Perry said, adding that he expected several more arrests to be made.

"Any type of animal blood sport activity is a serious crime and will not be tolerated in Los Angeles County," he said.

Stephanie Bell, director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' emergency response team, told NBC News on Tuesday afternoon that the raid would "mitigate a lot of suffering for a lot of animals."

"Cockfighting is a vicious blood sport and it leaves animals mangled bloody and broken," she said.

Cockfighting is illegal in every state in the U.S. and a felony in 40 states, according to the Humane Society.

Great White Shark Leaps Into Australia Fisherman’s Boat

by PETRA CAHILL and RIMA ABDELKADER

LONDON — A great white shark jumped inside a 73-year-old fisherman's boat — and he lived to tell the tale with little more than a skinned arm.

Australian Terry Selwood was fishing in calm waters in the same spot he's been dropping a line for the last 50 years when the 7-foot long, 440-pound shark leaped into his vessel on Saturday.

"I just caught a blur coming in the corner of me eye … and this thing hit me in the forearm, spun me round and knocked me off me feet," Selwood told the Australia Broadcasting Corporation.

He recounted scrambling to safety as the shark was "thrashing around madly."

When Selwood looked down, he said to himself: "There's a shark in me boat!"

Selwood told NBC News in a phone interview Monday that he lost "a bit of skin" on his right forearm after the shark jumped onto his 15-foot long boat — leaving him bleeding.

"It was a bit dramatic," the retired construction worker added.

He said the coast guard officers didn't believe his story until they saw it with their own eyes.

"Oh my God, look at that! There's a shark in your boat!" he quoted them as saying.

Bill Bates, the skipper of the rescue vessel that brought Selwood to safety, told NBC News that the incident was "totally out of the ordinary."

He added: "We do get a lot of sharks in the area, but we don't get sharks that have jumped onto boats."

Despite his close encounter, Selwood said he's eager to get back out on the water.

"I think next time I might find a crocodile to wrestle, just to stay in the limelight," he joked.

Tree-climbing, seed-spitting goats aid farming in Morocco

Scientists are challenging the idea the the goats are a menace to the trees because they like climbing them and eating the fruit.

It's tough for trees to thrive in the semi-desert Sous valley region of southern Morocco, but scientists have found that some might be getting a helping hand from an unlikely source.

While the local goats have been considered something of a menace because of their fondness for the argan fruit, Spanish ecologists have observed an unusual way in which they might actually be helping - they are constantly spitting out their seeds.

Domesticated goats in the region are inordinately fond of climbing to the precarious tops of argan trees to find fresh forage.

In some arid habitats, such as argan forests, most green vegetation is at the tops of the trees - which can grow 10 metres high.

Local goatherds are known to encourage the activity, pruning the bushy, thorny trees to make it easier for goats to ascend them, and even helping the goats' kids to learn how to climb.

During the bare autumn season in the region, goats can spend three quarters of their foraging time "treetop grazing" in the argan trees.

Argan is popular for the beauty products which feature in argan oil, made from the tree's nuts.

However, the goats don't like the large argan seeds. Like cows, sheep and deer, goats re-chew their food after fermenting it for a while in a specialised stomach, and while ruminating over their cud, the goats have been observed spitting out the argan nuts.

This means they are delivering clean seeds to new ground, wherever the goat has wandered.

Scientists believe that in gaining some distance from the parent tree, the seedling gains a much better chance of survival.

This novel seed dispersal effect is a variation on the mechanism ecologists call "endozoochory", in which seeds more commonly pass all the way through the animal's digestive system before departing at the other end.

The authors suspected that reports of goats dispersing argan seeds by this more common mechanism were mistaken.

The researchers have witnessed sheep, captive red deer and fallow deer spitting seeds while chewing their cud, and suspect this spitting variation on endozoochory may actually be common - and perhaps an essential route of seed spread for some plant species.

‘ONCE THERE WAS A RACE CALLED MALAYS BUT THEY ARE NOW EXTINCT’ – DR M WARNS ‘NO MONEY, NO TALK’ MALAYS OF BEING WIPED OUT BY GREED & CORRUPTION

PETALING JAYA – Saying Malay nationalism no longer existed, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today claimed that these days if they were not offered money, contracts or positions, the Malays would not be bothered to save Malaysia.
In his latest blog post, the PPBM chairman – who authored “The Malay Dilemma” – feared that Malays would disappear from the face of the earth if this culture replaced Malay nationalism.

“Will history books one day contain a paragraph that reads ‘Once, there was a race known as the Malays but they have since become extinct due to avarice’? Only God knows.”

Malaysia’s longest serving PM said he grew up in an era when people were opposing the Malayan Union and fighting against colonial rule.

During that time, Mahathir said, the only thing that prompted him and his friends to fight for such a cause and spend whatever money they had on it, was to ensure success, without expecting anything in return.

The Malays, he lamented, had since changed. There no longer existed any love for the race and the country, he claimed.

“Being nationalistic is seen as being racist. We are embarrassed about Malay pride.”

Mahathir’s post comes two days after more than 1,000 PPBM members in Perak quit the party allegedly due to discontentment over president Muhyiddin Yassin’s handling of the organisation.

PPBM Ipoh Timur division chief Azrul Suhadi Ahmad Mokhtar, who led the resignation, said Muhyiddin had failed to resolve conflicts at the national and state levels despite being given a week to do so.

PPBM Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman later accused vice-president Hamidah Osman of masterminding the resignations and challenged her to leave the party.

Syed Saddiq also called Hamidah, the former Gopeng Umno Wanita chief, a “hypocrite”, claiming she was upset with Muhyiddin’s decision not to name her as PPBM Perak state chief.

He said Hamidah had been the biggest supporter of Muhyiddin, right until Ahmad Faizal Azumu was named the party’s Perak chief instead of her.

It's Been 3 Years Since Narendra Modi Took Office -- How Do India's Millennials Rate Their PM?

MONEY SHARMA/AFP/Getty Images.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed three years in office on May 26, 2017. The last 12 months have seen his government implement some extremely bold policy decisions, so it was no surprise that news sites and TV channels here analyzed the achievements and problems that Modi’s tenure has brought so far, even more frenetically then they have done in years past. #3YearsofModiGovt trended on social media all weekend.

Public surveys indicate that Modi continues to be the most popular leader India has ever had. But as a millennial in the nation projected to have the youngest population in the world by 2020, it's worth asking how Indian millennials specifically view him. I asked fellow 20-35 year olds how they see Modi and how they’d evaluate his government’s stance on the issues that matter most to them over the past three years. Here’s what I learned:

Demonetization was a major talking point— it is arguably the most radical policy move our generation has witnessed as adults. But millennials seem divided on whether it was a big miscalculation or a big accomplishment.

Some felt that the positive outcomes outweighed the negatives: “Finally the poor have access to banking services, and the rich now will have no choice but to declare their wealth and pay all the tax they owe going forward,” said B. Sridhar, 27, an engineer. Others felt it was damaging and fruitful in equal measure. For Vishal Menda, 26, a student, it was “a genius move, but badly executed.” Rustom Vakharia, 25, an investment professional, agreed: “Most people got away because they’re too clever to store their illegal wealth in cash alone, and the common man was severely inconvenienced--but it did change the mindset of the entire nation overnight.”

Others were more decisively critical. “I'll make no bones about it,” said Priya Elias, 28, a writer and lawyer. “I see demonetization as a massive failure. It impacted the poor disproportionately and failed to eradicate black money to the extent it promised. ”

Unemployment and job security in an era of ever increasing automation is another major concern. “We’re witnessing jobless growth; unemployment is the single biggest failure of this government,” said Ruben Mascarehas, 29, a social activist and entrepreneur. “We have a very small window of opportunity before our demographic dividend turns into a demographic nightmare—our young population will soon begin to age—but I see no sense of urgency.” Sharang Shah, 25, a former legislative assistant to a member of parliament, agreed: “Creating enough jobs is going to be very tough—plus, a large labor pool is useless if they're not equipped with skills that make them employable. Hopefully Modi’s ‘Skill India’ initiative will help address that.”

When asked what they see as Modi’s greatest challenges ahead, the issues that came up were national security and the situation in Kashmir. Many also expressed concern around India’s equation with Pakistan and China.

ROBERT KUOK GIVES BN A GOOD TICKING OFF: WHATEVER THE CHINESE OWN, THEY PAID FOR IT. THEY DID NOT GET IT FOR FREE

Malaysia’s tycoons  are investing heavily overseas instead of re-investing in Malaysia.

This definitely does not bode well for the country & her citizens.

As history past decades has shown, many of the Chinese businesses have been taken over by either GLCs or BN businessmen aligned with politicians.

Robert Kuok

Business magnateRobert Kuok Hock Nien, is a Malaysian Chinese business magnate and investor. According to Forbes, his net worth is estimated at $11.3 billion on March 2016, making him the richest person in Malaysia ... WikipediaBornOctober 6, 1923 (age 93), Johor Bahru, MalaysiaNet worth12.2 billion USD (2017) ForbesSpouseHo Poh LinOrganizations foundedShangri-La Hotels and ResortsMoreChildrenBeau KuokKuok Khoon EanKuok Hui KwongKuok Khoon WahKuok Khoon HoJeffrey Ong Teng BueyRuth KuokSiblingsWilliam KuokPhilip Kuok

Bit by bit , many of the huge family corporations and big businesses are leaving for safer havens such as Singapore or Hong Kong, where they feel their fortunes and business empires are relatively safe and secure from greedy hands.

Come to think of it, it’s an oxymoron.

On one hand BN tells us that they are trying to attract foreign investors / investments..

On the other, they are pushing away local investors (many of whom happens to be of Chinese ethnicity).

Robert Kuok in a Star interview asked about the sense of discrimination among the Chinese in Malaysia, Kuok demurred, saying:

「This will lead only to highly controversial statements, which is not good for anybody.
It may cause grief or hurt those Chinese who are living in Malaysia, one must never be the cause of any kind of inter-racial hostility.
Only when the greedy grabbing of wealth & power stops, will Malaysia have a chance to progress.

Else, it will go downhill.

For now, the people can afford to make noise on a full stomach. Wait till their stomachs are empty.

All the racial & religious issues will lead to conflict when the economy tanks.

And it is prudent for politicians playing up these issues, before they really get out of hand.

I』m not raising these points because these businesses are owned by the Chinese.

Businessmen are businessmen.Particularly the big fishes in the Chinese community.

Their wealth do not belong to all the Chinese. The point is, regardless of ethnicity, a growing economy is important to sustain this country.

More so for the Chinese whom are largely in the private sector. And many, many Chinese these days are losing hope.

Before BN start accusing & calling the Chinese unkind names, maybe they ought to pause and consider about how far they have come with a growing affluent middle-class and benefiting _ affirmative policies.

It does not come free. It does not come solely from petro-money. It came from a strong and stable economy.

Indirectly, It came from sacrifices by the normal non-Malays who had to give up some of their rights.

It came from the risks non-Malays had to make to build up their businesses, and then share it with BN businessmen.

Whatever the Chinese own, they paid for it over many generations . They did not get it for free.

Some had to borrow from loan-sharks.,taking most of the risks. Most sacrificed family time.

Not all benefitted and became wildly successful. Some lost everything, fortunes & family.

At the lower spectrum, they sacrificed years working overseas illegally to save enough to buy their home & capital for business.

This Suit-Wearing Dog Is The Best Used Car Salesman We’ve Ever Seen

Paws down, car buying can be ruff. Fortunately, there’s a pint-sized car dealer who’s eager to help.

Introducing Brus Griffin, an adorable Brussels Griffon who you know you can trust because she’s wearing a suit and tie.

The tiny dog, whose real name is Gilda, is the star of a hit YouTube video this week that shows her peddling cars for the imaginary Brus Griffin’s Motor World.

“Our prices are dangerously low because I can’t read!” Brus Griffin boasts while posing in a used car lot. “Should a dog be selling cars? Probably not. Come get yours today before the government catches wind of this and shuts us down!”

Brus’ owner, a woman named Steph who also has a second Brussels Griffon named Griff, told HuffPost that inspiration for the commercial filmed last week came after she purchased the child-sized suit for her little breadwinner from a thrift store.

“I buy them outfits sometimes because it’s hilarious and great for the pictures,” she said by email on Wednesday. “It was only $4 and had already paid for itself in laughs before I even got home.”

After putting the suit on the pooch ― which Steph said her dog “actually really liked” ― she said she couldn’t shake off her dog’s resemblance to a car salesman. As for the name, Brus Griffin, she called it “just the slimy car salesman name I used.”

Of course, because they say it’s the suit that makes the man, other videos posted on Instagram show Gilda posing as a serious, chair-swiveling attorney, with the “Law and Order” theme song playing in the background.

“Have you been a bad dog? Injured while fetching?” the video’s captions asks. “Call Brus Griffin of Griffin & Griffin Law.”

Another photo shows her in a side-by-side comparison to paper salesman Dwight Schrute from “The Office” and then again in a sales meeting for ― what else? ― tennis balls, compliments of Reddit’s Photoshop Battles.

Talk about a dog who knows a few tricks.

Sri Lanka’s Missing People

NEW DELHI (dataLEADS/ ANN) - Sri Lanka is investigating thousands of missing-persons cases who disappeared during the fight against separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, which ended in May 2009. As many as 65,000 people, mostly from the ethnic Tamil minority, are still missing in the country.

It was in 2016 that Sri Lanka set up an office to locate thousands of people still missing years after the defeat of separatist Tamil Tiger rebels. The Office of Missing Persons (OMP) is tasked to recommend compensation and clear the way for families of the dead to take legal action against anyone responsible for the disappearances of their loved ones.

The government has agreed to issue certificates of absence to relatives of over 65,000 that went missing during the civil war. There are as many as 40,000 war widows in the country. These widows don't know if their husbands are alive or dead. The OMP this year released the National Policy on Reconciliation and Coexistence. It said that the country has endured a three-decade long civil war including a protracted armed conflict which has caused suffering and damage to all communities and people in the country. “The armed struggle concluded in 2009, leaving behind a breakdown in relations and trust, intolerance and prejudice between and within communities in the country”, it said.

The missing disappeared during the fight against separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, which ended in May 2009, when the Sri Lankan forces crushed the rebels fighting for a separate homeland for the ethnic minority. In 1983, the Tamil Tigers began fighting for an independent Tamil state in the north and east of the island of Sri Lanka. Later, a radical Marxist group waged an armed revolt against the government in 1987-89.

As there are apprehensions that some of the missing might be still at locations used for incarceration of rebels and suspected rebels by the government forces during the war, Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena on May 21, said, "If there are allegations that people are still being held in some locations, the government will set up a mechanism to inspect them."

According to India's former National Security Advisor and Foreign Secretary, Shivshankar Menon, between 1983 and 2009, nearly 80,000 to 100,000 people, including combatants from both sides, lost their lives. According to Menon’s book, Choices: Inside the Making of India's Foreign Policy, among them were 30,000 to 50,000 civilians, 27,693 LTTE cadres, 23,790 Sri Lankan Army personnel, and 1,155 men of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF). Some 40,000 people are believed to have been killed in the final few months of the conflict alone.

Bangladesh: Statue of Lady Justice on SC premises taken down

By News Desk 26 May 2017 The Daily Star (Bangladesh)

DHAKA (The Daily Star/ANN) - The move comes a month after an Islamic group demanded its removal from Supreme Court premises and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina agreed with them.

The Supreme Court authorities have taken down the statue of the Greek Goddess of Justice Themis on the SC premises in the wee hours today.

Some five to seven workers were hammering at the base of the statue while four to five other people, including Mrinal Haque, the sculptor, were overseeing the work that began around 11:30pm yesterday.

There was a pick-up parked nearby. Journalists were not allowed inside the premises.

Contacted, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the chief justice (SK Sinha) had a meeting with the incumbent and former presidents and general secretaries of the Supreme Court Bar Association, including eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain. At the meeting, the CJ sought their opinion about removing the statue.

“They opined that it should be removed to avert any untoward situation,” he told The Daily Star, adding that the statue might be relocated to a place near the Supreme Court Museum, which is also on the SC premises.

Mrinal Haque, who was standing on the other side of the main gate of the apex court, told The Daily Star, “I have nothing to say. When will we become humans? It is a matter of great sorrow. When will the people of the country be educated?

“I do not know anything. The statue is being removed following pressure from high-ups. I have come here because they would damage it if they took it down without me.

“We have conceded defeat. It's a slap on the face of the pro-liberation, cultural and freedom-loving people of the country. It seems Razakars, Al-Badrs are the winners.”

Contacted, Maruf Hossain Sardar, deputy commissioner of DMP (Ramna division), said they were not aware of the removal of the statue.

Around 2:00am, some 100 youths, under the banner of Bikkhubdo Nagorik (aggrieved citizens), gathered near the SC premises and blocked the road. They were chanting slogans like -- “Joy Bangla, why surrender to Hefajat?”

Terming the statue “un-Islamic”, Hefajat-e Islam, Awami Olama League and some other Islamist organisations demanded its immediate removal. On April 21, Islami Andolan Bangladesh demanded that the government remove the statue before Ramadan.

BEWARE : Malaysian Boy Sleeps With Earphone On, Plugged Into Mobile And Power Bank – Found Dead

A teenage boy, who fell asleep with his earphones on, which was plugged into his mobile phone that was charging, was found dead yesterday morning.

The victim’s mother found her son lying motionless in his bedroom in Taman Merbok, Bukit Baru here.

State Criminal Investigation Department chief Kamaluddin Kassim said the boy’s 48-year-old mother, a nurse, had gone to wake him up at 7am yesterday.

“As she did not get any response from her son, the mother used a spare key to unlock her son’s bedroom door. She found him lying motionless on the bed.

“The victim had both earphones on and the earphones were connected to a mobile phone, which was plugged to a power bank,” said Kamaluddin.

The mother had tried to wake her son up but there was no response. She then lodged a report at the Bukit Baru police station at 8.10am on Friday.

Saya Cuma Tukar Agama ,Tidak Tukar Bangsa – Chinese Is My Root , Islam Is My Way Of Life – Sophia Ng
BythecoveragePosted on May 29, 2017

Alhamdulillah.. bertambah seorang lagi saudara seagama kita.Admin tabik dan hormat pada beliau.baca apa yg dia tulis tentang nama cina pada IC tapi agama islam.

Assalammualaykum to my dearest readers. Ok today.. my blog is regarding my name. Last month I went to collect my identity card from JPN. Alhamdulillah , it was done after such a long process.

Then..suddenly I recall an incident that happened when I was attending a talk regarding Shalat. This talk was registered by my boss from my working place ( All Praise to Allah, my boss sayang me so much and she reserved this ceramah agama seat for me )

So I was searching my name on the attendance sheet…… and I found this :
Sophea Ng bt Abdullah
Hmm…. Since when my father become Abdullah?

Then I took my pen and draw a line on the name, and I wrote my name beside it — Ng Pooi Kheng. And then there was a pretty lady ( the person incharged of the attendance ) looked at me with a very unusual eye sight and asked :

“ ni ke nama betul?”
“ya Cik , ni nama saya.” I answered.
“eh.. betul ke ?” she asked again.
“ ya Cik.” I answered again , with a big wide smile *wink* ,

Hmmm….. lots people still dunno that it is not compulsory to change the name after someone embrace Islam.

I was once asked by someone :

XX :“ tahniah dah masuk Islam.. nama baru ?”
ME : “oh… saya takde nama baru.”
XX : “yang orang lain dok panggil Sophea tu?”
ME : “ooh tu nama panggilan. Dalam IC tak tukar.”
XX : “ekk apasal pulak? Kena lah tambah bt Abdullah kat belakang.”
ME : “yea boleh kalau nak tambah BT ABDULLAH.. tapi kalau x tambah pun takpe. Tak wajib.”
XX : “ ehhh kenalah tambah. Ng Pooi Kheng tu nama orang cina. Dah masuk Islam kena tukar nama , baru lar orang lain tau dah tukar agama.”
ME : “ Saya tukar agama , tapi saya tak tukar bangsa.”

Don’t worry , I answered it in a very nice way and smile of course… *ngeeee*

Ng is my surname — 黄 (huang2)
Pooi Kheng is my name — 佩琼 (pei4 qiong2)
My name roughly means — fine , nice, good things and happiness.

For me…it might not be an Islamic name. but my name was given by my parents. It is just like the first gift they gave me when I was born. I appreciate my name so much.

And again.. embraced Islam doesn’t mean I turn myself into a Malay or Arabian. Not to be racist, but I am sure all of us are proud of our own blood. Same goes to me. I was a Chinese, and the only thing changed is… I am now a Chinese Muslim ( Allah is the Greatest)

Islam is a peaceful religion, that teach and guide us towards the right pathway. The beauty of Islam should be seen through our attitude , personality , our life , our heart and our soul…. Not through our name.

But anyway…. You can still call me anyway u like.. depends on how close we are Ng , Angie , Sophea , Sophy , ah kheng , pooi kheng, kheng kheng….et c. hehehe if we are close enough , no matter how u called me , I will sure recognize you that’s all I want to share.

Chinese is my root ; Islam is my way of life.
Forgive me if my sentences offended anyone. Allah knows the Best.

Lots of love
Wa’laykumussalam
Regards,
Sophea Ng, 佩琼。

Religion is no place to do business as it is a losing proposition from the start

MUSLIMS WON’T BE SPARED AS ECONOMY STARTS TO TANK UNDER NAJIB: IT’S TIME FOR ISLAMIC BANKS TO CONSIDER MERGER – BIMB CHIEF

The merger of Islamic banking units in Malaysia is crucial as the market is becoming overcrowded with the players hungry for growth, outgoing BIMB Holdings Bhd Group Chief Executive Officer Zukri Samat proposed.

He said the creation of a couple of mega Islamic banks could rival not only other Islamic banks in the country, but also the “big boys” from the conventional side such as Maybank and CIMB.

On a larger scale, mega Islamic banks will have huge potential to spread their wings off the Malaysian shores into Indonesia, Cambodia and Singapore to become a regional champion, he said.

“All together, we have 16 banks offering Islamic financial products. For a small country like Malaysia, it’s a bit overcrowded. So long as we are small and fragmented, it is difficult to grow.

“Probably there could be some form of merger among Islamic banks, just like the conventional banks did during the 1997 financial crisis. The time is right for a merger,” he told Bernama.

In the aftermath of the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis, Bank Negara Malaysia took stronger measures by calling a massive consolidation of 58 financial institutions, comprising 21 domestic commercial banks, 25 finance companies and 12 merchant banks, into 10 anchor banking groups.

The anchor banks comprised Malayan Banking Bhd, Bumiputra-Commerce Bank Bhd, RHB Bank Bhd, Public Bank Bhd, Arab-Malaysian Bank Bhd, Hong Leong Bank Bhd, Perwira Affin Bank Bhd, Multi-Purpose Bank Bhd, Southern Bank Bhd and EON Bank Bhd.

Intense competition

The intervention, which concluded by end of 2000, helped improve Malaysia’s banking sector in terms of market position, efficiency and capital.

Similarly, Zukri believes that the consolidation of Islamic banks through a merger exercise could boost industry growth and help achieve the country’s aspiration to become a global hub for Islamic banking.

Zukri said the intense competition has slowed the average growth rate of Islamic banks in Malaysia from 15 to 20 per cent about 10 to 15 years ago to only five per cent in the past five years.

Even foreign Islamic banks such as Kuwait Finance House, Asian Finance Bank and Al Rajhi Bank Malaysia are feeling the pinch from the stiff market.

“If you look at the numbers today and 10 years ago, they have not moved very much. They are merely inching their way,” he explained.

Mega bank

In 2014, three of Malaysia’s largest financial institutions – CIMB Group, RHB Capital and Malaysia Building Society Bhd – were in talks to combine their business and create a mega Islamic bank, that could potentially be one of Southeast Asia’s biggest lenders by assets.

The three-way merger will not only leapfrog Maybank, the country’s largest bank by assets, but is large enough to compete with global giant financial instutions such as HSBC and Standard Chartered.

However, the plan was scrapped and abandoned amid tumbling oil prices in 2015.

Efforts to create a mega Islamic bank in the region in Malaysia faltered. Likewise, Indonesia was also considering forming a mega Islamic bank in 2015.

Nevertheless, the plan to create a US$8 billion worth giant entity involving Shariah-compliant units – Bank Negara Indonesia, Bank Mandiri, Bank Tabungan Negara and Bank Rakyat Indonesia – was put on hold due to legal and regulatory issues pertinent to capital requirements.
Zukri said the aspirations to create a mega Islamic bank would not become a reality if market players were to remain silent, with no effort put it.

“It should be market driven, rather than forced by the authority,” he pointed out.

As at end of 2016, Islamic banking assets accounted for 27 percent of Malaysia’s total banking system worth of RM2.44 trillion.

The government has called for 40 percent of all banking assets nationwide to be Shariah-compliant by 2020.

Wow Wow well done - Changi Airport crosses 1 billion passenger milestone

Yahoo Singapore file photo

More than one billion passengers passed through Changi Airport since 1981 when it first opened, said the airport in a media statement on Monday (29 April).

The milestone was reached in April and the airport is on track to handle 60 million passengers in 2017, it added.

Last year, about 58.7 million passengers passed through Changi Airport, making it the sixth busiest airport in the world for international traffic.

In April, there were 5.17 million passenger movements in April, a 7.8 per cent year-on-year increase, said the airport. Passenger traffic in April was boosted by growth across all regions except the Middle East. Nine out of Changi’s top 20 country markets registered double-digit growth, including India (16 per cent), Indonesia (16 per cent) and Malaysia (11 per cent).

About 120 airlines operate at the Singapore air hub, linking Singapore to more than 380 cities globally.

What Animals can teach humans about Friendship beyond races

Tiger, lion and bear form unusual friendship

Baloo the bear, Leo the Lion and Shere Khan the tiger have the most unusual and unlikely friendship between them.

Tiger, lion and bear form unusual friendship

Living with the zoo's founders for the past eight years, Shere Khan, Baloo and Leo have now moved to a purpose built habitat

Rescued eight years ago during a police drugs raid in Atlanta, Georgia, the three friends were only cubs at the time and barely two months old.

They had been kept as status symbol pets by the drug barons.

Delivered to the Noah's Ark animal rescue centre in Locust Grove, Georgia, the decision was made to keep the youngsters together.

"We could have separated them, but since they came as a kind of family, the zoo decided to keep them together," said Diane Smith, assistant director of the Noah's Ark zoo.
"To our knowledge, this is the only place where you'll find this combination of animals together, they are our BLT, (bear, lion and tiger).

Living with the zoo's founders for the past eight years, Shere Khan, Baloo and Leo have now moved to a purpose built habitat were the US public can now witness first hand their touching relationship.
"We didn't have the money to move them at first," said DIane.

"Now their habitat is sorted and they have been moved away from the children's zoo areas where the public couldn't really get a good look.

"Now, though, it is possible to see Baloo, who is a 1,000 pound bear, Shere Khan, a 350 pound tiger and Leo, who is also 350 pounds messing around like brothers.

"They are totally oblivious to the fact that in any other circumstance they would not be friends."
Handled by Charles and Jama Hedgecoth, the zoo's owners and founders, the three friendly giants appear to have have no comprehension of their animal differences.
"Baloo and Shere Khan are very close," says DIane.

"That is because they rise early, as Leo being a lion likes to spend most the day sleeping.
"It is wonderful and magical to see a giant American Black Bear put his arm around a Bengal tiger and then to see the tiger nuzzle up to the bear like a domestic cat.
"When Leo wakes up the three of them mess around for most of the day before they settle down to some food."
Surprisingly for three apex predators with the power to kill with a single bite or swipe of their paw, they are very relaxed around each other.

'"They eat, sleep and play together," said Jama Hedgecoth, founder of Noah's Ark zoo.
"As they treat each other as siblings they will lie on top of each other for heat and simply for affection.

"At the moment they are getting used to their new habitat.
"Shere Khan is being quite reticent about the move, but Baloo, the bear is very good at leading him on and making him feel comfortable and safe."

Explaining that the three 'brothers' have always seemed to share a unique bond, Charles Hedgecoth, Jama's husband and fellow founder talks about his role in their upbringing.
"They are obviously not wild animals any more," said Charles.

"Noah's Ark is their home and they could not possibly be separated from each other.
"You just have to remember who you're dealing with when you are with them though.
"It's when you forget that these fellows are wild animals that you get yourself in trouble."
According to DIane Smith, the trio's new habitat cost an estimated £15,000 and had to be constructed carefully, in order to accommodate its occupants.

"The clubhouse had to be very sturdy for the guys, because they all sleep in it together,"
We had to include a creek, because the tiger and the bear both like to be in water."

Russian Lawmaker: We Would Use Nukes if US or NATO Enters Crimea

The Western alliance’s troop buildup in Eastern Europe has Moscow spooked.

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — Russia would be forced to use nuclear weapons in any conflict in which U.S. or NATO forces entered eastern Ukraine, a member of Russia’s parliament told an international gathering of government security officials on Sunday.

“On the issue of NATO expansion on our borders, at some point I heard from the Russian military — and I think they are right — If U.S. forces, NATO forces, are, were, in the Crimea, in eastern Ukraine, Russia is undefendable militarily in case of conflict without using nuclear weapons in the early stage of the conflict,” Russian parliamentarian Vyacheslav Alekseyevich Nikonov told attendees at the GLOBSEC 2017 forum in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Russian military leaders have discussed Moscow’s willingness to use nuclear weapons in a conflict with military leaders in NATO, as part of broader and increasingly contentious conversations about the alliance’s expansion, Nikonov later told Defense One.

Nikonov’s threat might sound startling, but it’s in keeping with the current state of Russia’s ever-evolving policy on the use of nuclear weapons. While the Soviet Union maintained a policy against the first use of nukes, Putin’s government turned away from that strict prohibition in 2000 with the signing of a new military doctrine that allows for the limited use of nuclear weapons “in response to large-scale aggression utilizing conventional weapons in situations critical to the national security of the Russian Federation.”

Putin has also shown a growing willingness to invest in nuclear-weapons technology. In March, he vowed to put more money into new intercontinental ballistic missiles, so-called “strategic” nuclear forces, and to prioritize those military investments “above all” other areas.

But the type of nuclear weapons that Russia would use to defend its stolen territory in Crimea might be far smaller: sub-kiloton tactical devices dwarfed even by the roughly 15 kiloton Little Boy bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. These small warheads have emerged as a big concern for U.S. military leaders.

The Russians “maintain their tactical nuclear stockpile in ways that we have not,” Maj. Gen. William Hix, the Army’s director of strategy, plans, and policy said in March at the Booz Allen Hamilton Directed Energy Summit.

Still, a growing nuclear arsenal doesn’t mean that Putin is itching to stage a sneak attack.

“There is little indication that Russia plans to use nuclear weapons at the outset of a conflict, before it has engaged with conventional weapons, even though Russia could resort to the use of nuclear weapons first, during an ongoing conventional conflict,” Amy Wolf, a nuclear weapons specialist with the Congressional Research Service, wrote in February. “This is not new, and has been a part of Russian military doctrine for years.”

NATO on the march

Why is the Russian government telegraphing its willingness to go nuclear in Ukraine? In a word, NATO. The Cold War-born treaty organization of Western nations may seem obsolete to some, but not to Russia, which has watched with concern as NATO has added a dozen eastern members that used to be under Moscow’s sway.

“For us, [NATO] is a military alliance spanning three-quarters of the global defense money, now planning to expand that figure,” said Nikonov.

In the two years since Russia annexed Crimea, NATO’s Baltic members have doubled their defense budgets. In 2018, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia are projected to spend nearly $670 million, up from $210 million in 2014. “This growth is faster than any other region globally,” Craig Caffrey, principal analyst at IHS Jane’s, remarked last October. “In 2005, the region’s total defence budget was $930 million. By 2020, the region’s defence budget will be $2.1 billion.”

NATO has been expanding its troop presence in Eastern Europe as well. In April 2016, during the Warsaw summit, NATO agreed to increase the size of the NATO force deployed to Baltics, a posture move sometimes called enhanced forward presence. In January, the U.S. deployed some 4,000 troops to Poland. The following month, Germany, announced that it will send some 1,000 troops to  Lithuania.

It’s another mark of escalating tensions in the region due to continuing conflict in Ukraine and aggressive Russian activities across Europe, including a Kremlin-backed coup-attempt in Montenegro in October, complete with an assassination attempt on former Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic (Montenegro joined NATO in May.) Nikonov said these regional tensions, and their causes, are perceived very differently in Russia than in the West.

“For Russia, the definition of success in dealing with neighbors is to make them as friendly to Russia as possible,” he said at the GLOBSEC forum. “The definition of success for many people sitting in this room is how to distance those countries from Russia. I think these are conflicting goals.”

SACK YOUR ADVISORS, NAJIB – MALAYS ARE TURNING OFF TV3: CLAMOR FOR MAHATHIR TO RETAKE THE REINS GROWS – EVEN WITHIN UMNO!

An emotional hug for outgoing Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi from his successor Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.

PETALING JAYA – Umno does not hold any bright prospect in the future as its legacy in serving the country has been erased, and it will be difficult for it to regain the trust of the people, former information minister Zainuddin Maidin claims.

He said this situation has come about because the party’s current leaders wanted to be greater than former prime minister and Umno president Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In his blog post today, Zainuddin, who is popularly known as Zam, questioned if any of the present leaders had the qualification and credibility in the eyes of the public to be the next prime minister after Najib Razak.

The former Umno supreme councillor also pointed to Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, known as Pak Lah, as wanting to be “greater” than Mahathir.

He said Pak Lah had, in his tenure as the country’s fifth prime minister from 2003 to 2009, promised democratic freedoms of international standards for the people.

“On the advice of his son-in-law (Khairy Jamaluddin), he gave compensation amounting to millions of ringgit to judges punished by Dr Mahathir for standing in the way of the country’s policies,” he said.

When Najib took over from Pak Lah, he tried to become “even greater”, he said.

Zainuddin claimed that Najib wanted to be the “father of Malaysian democracy” by abolishing the Internal Security Act, drawing support from the opposition for the move.

He said when Pak Lah and Najib tried to become more renowned and revered than Mahathir, the people suffered.

He said they, in fact, lost the confidence of the people, something not seen under the rule of any previous prime minister since independence.

“They (the people) felt that the hope and trust placed in the nation’s leadership had been betrayed.”

Saying that the people had also lost faith in government-controlled media, he questioned how they could be made to regain their confidence in Umno.

“TV3 is not watched any more and the mainstream newspapers are also not able to sell.

“The people no longer believe in economic growth figures and stories about investments worth billions of ringgit.”

He said there was a lack of confidence due to the “ad hoc” manner in which the economy was being managed and about the country’s politics.

He said the Vision 2020 agenda conceptualised under Mahathir had been replaced by National Transformation 2050 (TN50) and Proton, once a pride of the people, was no longer a national car.

Describing these actions as betraying Mahathir, he said: “There have been many other economic and political failures that have eroded Umno’s legacy which Malays have until now proudly looked up to.”

He said the people considered Mahathir’s administration from 1981 to 2003 as the most respected and principled in history.

He said the former Umno president had solidified the institution of the royalty such that it became revered and did not interfere in the affairs of the people.

The country has been left with nostalgia for the “golden” era of Umno, which collapsed under its current leaders, he added.

Peer-Reviewed Science Journal Gets HOAXED By Fake Science Paper That Claims PENISES Cause Climate Change

Remember when I said recently that the entire left-wing scientific establishment has become convinced that everything causes climate change? My assertion has now been confirmed beyond any doubt.

A peer-reviewed science journal has just been caught publishing a hilariously fake science paper — written in leftish-sounding “sciency gibberish” — that literally claims penises cause climate change.

Because this junk science assertion fits into the lunatic narrative of the totalitarian Left, it was reviewed by multiple scientists and accepted for publication, even though the entire paper was deliberately written to consist of indecipherable nonsense pretending to sound like elitist left-wing “science.” (Find more news about fake science at FakeScience.news.)

James Delingpole at Breitbart.com covers this hilarious development as follows:

Gender studies is a fake academic industry populated by charlatans, deranged activists and gullible idiots.

Now, a pair of enterprising hoaxers has proved it scientifically by persuading an academic journal to peer-review and publish their paper claiming that the penis is not really a male genital organ but a social construct.

The paper, published by Cogent Social Sciences – “a multidisciplinary open access journal offering high quality peer review across the social sciences” – also claims that penises are responsible for causing climate change.

The two hoaxers are Peter Boghossian, a full-time faculty member in the Philosophy department at Portland State University, and James Lindsay, who has a doctorate in math and a background in physics.

They were hoping to emulate probably the most famous academic hoax in recent years: the Sokal Hoax – named after NYU and UCL physics professor Alan Sokal – who in 1996 persuaded an academic journal called Social Text to accept a paper titled “Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity”.

Sokal’s paper – comprising pages of impressive-sounding but meaningless pseudo-academic jargon – was written in part to demonstrate that humanities journals will publish pretty much anything so long as it sounds like “proper leftist thought;” and partly in order to send up the absurdity of so much post-modernist social science.

So, for this new spoof, Boghossian and Lindsay were careful to throw in lots of signifier phrases to indicate fashionable anti-male bias:

We intended to test the hypothesis that flattery of the academic Left’s moral architecture in general, and of the moral orthodoxy in gender studies in particular, is the overwhelming determiner of publication in an academic journal in the field. That is, we sought to demonstrate that a desire for a certain moral view of the world to be validated could overcome the critical assessment required for legitimate scholarship. Particularly, we suspected that gender studies is crippled academically by an overriding almost-religious belief that maleness is the root of all evil. On the evidence, our suspicion was justified.

They also took care to make it completely incomprehensible.

We didn’t try to make the paper coherent; instead, we stuffed it full of jargon (like “discursive” and “isomorphism”), nonsense (like arguing that hypermasculine men are both inside and outside of certain discourses at the same time), red-flag phrases (like “pre-post-patriarchal society”), lewd references to slang terms for the penis, insulting phrasing regarding men (including referring to some men who choose not to have children as being “unable to coerce a mate”), and allusions to rape (we stated that “manspreading,” a complaint levied against men for sitting with their legs spread wide, is “akin to raping the empty space around him”). After completing the paper, we read it carefully to ensure it didn’t say anything meaningful, and as neither one of us could determine what it is actually about, we deemed it a success.

Some of it was written with the help of the Postmodern Generator – “a website coded in the 1990s by Andrew Bulhak featuring an algorithm, based on NYU physicist Alan Sokal’s method of hoaxing a cultural studies journal called Social Text, that returns a different fake postmodern ‘paper’ every time the page is reloaded.”

… None of it should have survived more than a moment’s scrutiny by serious academics. But it was peer-reviewed by two experts in the field who, after suggesting only a few changes, passed it for publication:

Cogent Social Sciences eventually accepted “The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct.” The reviewers were amazingly encouraging, giving us very high marks in nearly every category. For example, one reviewer graded our thesis statement “sound” and praised it thusly, “It capturs [sic] the issue of hypermasculinity through a multi-dimensional and nonlinear process” (which we take to mean that it wanders aimlessly through many layers of jargon and nonsense). The other reviewer marked the thesis, along with the entire paper, “outstanding” in every applicable category.

They didn’t accept the paper outright, however. Cogent Social Sciences’ Reviewer #2 offered us a few relatively easy fixes to make our paper “better.” We effortlessly completed them in about two hours, putting in a little more nonsense about “manspreading” (which we alleged to be a cause of climate change) and “dick-measuring contests.”

No claim made in the paper was considered too ludicrous by the peer-reviewers: not even the one claiming that the penis is “the universal performative source of rape, and is the conceptual driver behind much of climate change.

‘MASTURBATION MONTH’ : NOW GUAN ENG’S GOVT ACCUSED OF HOSTING OBSCENE TOURISM PROGRAM

GEORGE TOWN – A Penang state executive councillor today lodged a police report denying his alleged involvement in an indecent programme in Batu Feringghi near here.

Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said State Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang in his report alleged he was completely unaware of the programme. “The exco came to know about the matter when he was at the Jelutong market after an unidentified man passed him a sheet of paper and when he was in the house, he examined the paper which was related to a ‘Masturbation Month’ programme,” Anuar said here today.

It was learned the programme which would allegedly be held at a hotel with the cooperation of Penang Tourism had been uploaded on Facebook.

Anuar said police were tracking down the social site account owner to facilitate investigations.

Earlier, a hotel in Batu Feringghi also lodged a police report to deny its alleged involvement in the programme after a banner about the festival had displayed the hotel’s name.

the Malays comfort zone

MOTHER OF ALL MALAY REBELLIONS UNSTOPPABLE: NO AMOUNT OF ‘WALA’ CAN SAVE NAJIB & ROSMAH FROM THE JAWS OF DOOM

For some Malays, their greatest fear, is not God, a North Korean invasion, or environmental disaster; he is more afraid of losing his comfort zone.

If the Malay were truly afraid of God, he would not steal from the rakyat, rape little girls or make his victim marry the rapist. Nor would he beat young boys to death, and attribute his death to God’s will.

If the Malay feared that Kim Jong-un would bomb Malaysia, he would immediately suspend diplomatic ties, and observe the United Nations arms embargo, against North Korea. Instead, we help the North Koreans to launder money and  Umno-Baruputra companies assist them in bypassing the UN trade sanctions.

If Malays were bothered about environmental degradation, they would not turn parts of Pahang into a barren, landscape resembling Mars. They would ban the logging on hill slopes which helps trigger flooding in Kelantan. If they really feared God, they would utilise the money collected for the flood victims, to rehouse them. Why has the Kelantan state government not done enough to help the victims of the great flood of 2014?

WHY ERASE OUR PAST?

One can become a good Muslim, without having to become a wannabe Arab. For those who insist that Malay customs are derived from Islam, let us remind them that before Islam came to these shores, the Malays were pagan, before they adopted Hinduism and Buddhism.

Are various people afraid that the Malays might wish to rediscover his ancestral lineage? Why did the government try to erase the remnants of the great Hindu civilisation, at the Bujang Valley in Kedah?

These historical, and archaeological treasures could have rivalled those of Angkor Wat, in Cambodia and Borobudur, Indonesia.

BLINDING MUSLIM VOTERS WITH ARABIC WORDS

In 2011, Najib Abdul Razak told Malaysians that his government’s social transformation program (STP) would complement the Government Transformation Programme (GTP), Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and the Entry Point Project (EPP), and create a balanced, fair and equitable society.

These bland anagrams are now obsolete, because today, Najib takes advantage of the Muslim’s desire to be closer to God, and uses Islamic principles, to tap into the Malay mindset and his subservience to God.

Blinding Muslim voters with Arabic words such as Wala’ (loyalty), Wasatiyyah (Moderation) and Tabayyun (Understanding), Najib claimed that these words described the relationship between a leader and his followers, and were crucial for  the survival and success of the nation.

He failed to mention a responsible and clean leadership, which does not cheat its own people and he dismissed open-minded and liberal people, because he claimed they failed to be guided by Wala’ and Wasatiyyah.

Can the Malay mind be so gullible, that he thinks that anything Arabic, including words, robes, dress and names, can bring him closer to God? Has the Malay an identity crisis, that he forsakes his own culture, upbringing and roots?
Arabic words and the catch phrase – “to further Islamic studies”, is the latest tool used by politicians and their wives, to abuse public funds on foreign junkets.

In 2015, JAKIM shut down ‘Secret Recipe’ for a few days, because of “toyyiban” issues in its main kitchen. Toyyiban relates to Lcleanliness, but why were the thousands of mamak shops and filthy stalls excluded from toyyiban?

ABUSING RELIGION TO FURTHER THEIR OWN AGENDA

Permata has been awarded hundreds of millions of ringgits, for a few gifted children, who would have been helped anyway. The government overlooks the millions of deprived children, whose educational needs are neglected. Why are ordinary, smart teenagers, deprived of overseas scholarships? Why should Permata get money, but not the marginalised children?

A political pundit said, “The convenient excuse, “to  groom Muslim women and produce scholars, with the help of the Oxford Centre of Islamic Studies (OCIS)”, was used by a few prominent individuals, as an excuse  to fly to England, under the Permata banner.

“How do we know it is not a pre-Ramadhan junket, to enjoy a shopping trip, before  Hari Raya? If this trip would benefit gifted children, why was the Minister for Education excluded?

“The outburst by Salleh Keruak, against a few British journalists, was timely. It dissuaded other interested parties from pursuing the group visiting London. Undisturbed, they were free to indulge in perhaps, the main reason for this trip. Shopping to their heart’s content.”

ABUSING TAXPAYERS’ MONEY FOR PERSONAL GAIN

Another seasoned political observer said, “In 2015, the National Oversight and Whistleblowers (NOW) NGO, claimed that RM290,000 from Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (Yapeim), had been abused on two Islamic marriage courses, in Paris, in 2014 and 2015.

“In addition, Ministers have allegedly abused funds from an Islamic orphanage institution, to fund their golfing holidays in America. They will have cunningly arranged a meeting or two, at their holiday destination, to disguise their personal vacation, as an official trip.

“Ministers with children marrying or getting engaged to foreign spouses, have also abused taxpayers’ money, to fund their private functions. An official visit is always arranged at the same time as the personal event. Why should the taxpayer foot the transportation and accommodation costs, for their ministers, and their entourages?”

IN GOD’S NAME

Perhaps, the worst culprits are the Muslim officials, because they do not fear God. They happily use a few Arabic words to con a gullible Malay public, and to steal from the rakyat, by pretending to do God’s work.

Now it is official can use Aiyoh when speaking English and not be laugh at

UOB: Singapore dollar expected to weaken against ringgit

Close up of Singapore Dollar currency note against US Dollar.

Source: Bernama Source:  KUALA LUMPUR, 9 May 2017:

The cross rate between the Singapore dollar (SGD) versus the Malaysian ringgit (MYR) could possibly head lower and return to below the 3.0 level by year-end, says United Overseas Bank (UOB).

Based on current trend, the cross would likely pass through the 3.0 psychological level as the US dollar per ringgit (USD/MYR) is projected to hover at around 4.30 by end-December while USD/SGD may hold at 1.46.

“SGD is seen as a ‘safe haven’ currency in the region, and when the risks were higher, a lot of funds came in to support the republic’s currency.

Nope did not happen and UOB were wrong

“The SGD/MYR cross is now seen as quite expensive and there could be a reversion. Based on the rates predicted for year-end, the cross could head lower,” UOB (Malaysia) Bhd economist Julia Goh said at the sidelines of a media briefing on, ‘How Global Events Will Impact Malaysia’s 2017 Growth Trajectory’ here today.

May 29,2017 Exchange Rate Inggit to Singapore Dollar

Currency Selling TT/OD Buying TT
1 Singapore Dollar 3.1385 3.0330

The ringgit rose against the SGD to 3.0822/0855 as at 5pm today from yesterday’s 6pm rate of 3.0856/0886.

For the past decade, the cross had been traded bias to the strength of SGD, with the ringgit weakening to as low as to 3.1726 (16 March 2017). Its best performance was recorded at 2.2178 (25 May 2007).
The republic’s central bank, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), has been using the exchange rate as its main monetary policy tool to strike a balance between inflation from overseas and economic growth.

Goh said MAS would most likely take a neutral policy stand as the republic’s core inflation was manageable, despite market expectations that the policy might be tightened.
While external risks remain present in the form of uncertainty in the US president Donald Trump’s policies and geopolitical risks, she said there were mitigating factors as Malaysia was part of a wider production base in the region which benefits from domestic derived growth.

Goh said UOB projected Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth to expand to at least 4.5% this year and to 4.7% in 2018, compared to 4.2% in 2016.

She said Malaysia’s macro outlook was on the mend as the fog slowly lifts with its rising tide in exports and gains in new orders, reinforcing the bank’s view that the country’s economy should be progressing.

“Commodity prices have also levelled up, supporting Malaysia’s trade and current account surplus.
“After the recent record sell-off, funds started accumulating back to the 40% level in the Malaysian Government Securities. Supported by a US$96.1 billion foreign reserves (as of end-April 2017) and a rising trend in foreign direct investments, the undervalued ringgit is poised to strengthen.”

High time - DBKL cracking down on bus lane abuses

KUALA LUMPUR, 25 May 2017:

‘Not aware’, ‘in a hurry’ and ‘not intentional’ were among popular excuses given by motorists who were issued with summonses for driving private vehicles along designated bus lanes in an operation conducted by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in Jalan Ampang here yesterday.
In the operation which began at 10.30am, over 40 offence notices were issued within an hour – which showed the apathy of motorists towards compliance to traffic rules with regard to the use of bus and taxi lanes.

In addition, drivers who used the bus lanes also blamed the traffic jams, other drivers for not giving way or being discourteous while some even denied committing the offence and ended up arguing with the enforcement officers on duty.

DBKL Traffic Enforcement Division chief Mohd Hisham Izhar said a total of 18,535 notices were issued from January until April.

“Although the information is displayed on VMS (Variable Messaging Signs) and there are ‘Bus, Taxi Only’ signs painted clearly on the road surface, people are still breaking the rules and some even park their cars on the road shoulders along these special lanes which adds to the road congestion.
He said the special bus lanes were created to ensure smooth movement of buses to keep up with the bus schedule even when the roads were congested, in an effort to improve public transport services in the capital city.

To boost enforcement, Mohd Hisham said DBKL would conduct operations more frequently – apart from working in collaboration with the Road Transport Department in blacklisting errant drivers.
Thirteen bus lanes have been gazetted by DBKL – among them are Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah and Jalan Dang Wangi.

Counterfeit ringgit gang caught printing fake currency notes

SHAH ALAM, 24 May 2017:

Selangor police scored a major success when they busted a counterfeit money syndicate that had been active since last year following the arrest of six suspects including the mastermind in three raids yesterday.
State Commercial Crimes Investigation Department chief ACP Wan Rukman Wan Hassan said the raids were conducted in Klang, Shah Alam and Puchong between 2.30am and noon.
He said the raids netted counterfeit RM100 and RM20 notes worth RM12,540 and three sets of counterfeiting equipment.

“They were caught red-handed printing the counterfeit notes during the raids. The suspects moved from budget hotel to budget hotel to escape detection. It is estimated that they can produce counterfeit notes worth RM10,000 a day.

“The modus operandi of this syndicate is that after they print the counterfeit notes, they will sell to agents or middlemen who use them to buy goods at night and wet markets around the Klang Valley,” he told a media conference here today.

He said the suspects, four men and two women, aged between 20 and 40 years, would be remanded till Monday May 29 to facilitate investigations and that police were hunting down the agents and middlemen involved.

He added that the syndicate’s activities came to light after traders at the markets and banks lodged complaints on the circulation of the counterfeit notes.

DCA permits for large camera drones

PUTRAJAYA, 25 May 2017:

A permit-like approval from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) is required to fly a drone with camera weighing over 20kg.

DCA director-general Datuk Seri Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said the approval is to ensure such a machine would not be misused.

“DCA does not prohibit the use of drones, we are only regulating the operational aspects in accordance with the provisions under the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016, which came into effect on April 15 last year.”

He said this was because the use of drones could threaten public safety and with a camera, the machine could also be used as a surveillance tool.
“The drone is also capable of carrying bombs to cause destruction in specific locations, just like what’s happening in conflict-stricken countries.”

As such, he said despite the approval, drones should not be flown over 400 feet above the earth’s surface and within 50m from the crowds during take off and landing.

Individuals who violated the regulation could be fined up to RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding three years, or both, if convicted, while any organisation or company found to have committed the offence was liable for a fine of up to RM100,000 upon conviction.

However, he said, DCA was still discussing with several parties, including the Royal Malaysian Police, on the possibility of drones being used as part of their services.

Prior to this, the DCA has listed Putrajaya, Parliament building, Istana Negara, police stations, prisons and airports as no-fly zone areas for drones for security reasons.
