Human Trafficking in Guyana - South America

Read more here about Human Trafficking in Guyana

Professor Daizal Samad

THE Honourable Guyana Minister of Public Security has come down hard on human trafficking. The move is excellent and timely, and if the policy is implemented efficiently, we should see a dramatic decrease in this serious crime.

We ought always to bear in mind that any well-designed policy should contain strategies of coherent and coordinated implementation — action!

It is not infrequent to read or see or hear about underage girls being lured or taken to far-flung places on the pretext of getting jobs as waitresses, cooks, and so on. They end up being victims of crimes of rape, being bought and sold. The inverse is also true: young girls from the interior (especially Amerindian girls) being lured out to the coast on the pretext of “jobs.” This governmental initiative should put an end to those kinds of human trafficking. Victims should be provided relief (safe housing, food, educational opportunities, jobs), and the perpetrators should face severe penalties.

There is another and more insidious form of human trafficking as well: the “matrimonial” selling of underage girls, especially to boys or men of legal age. This is done in the full face of often unquestioning society. There are ceremonies held upon this trafficking, and the sale of young girls is final and forever. All of this yields a lifetime of misery and enslavement, and all is done in the name of some tradition or religion, or some other oppression.

How many times do we have to witness, and how much genius must we have to see, the damage — girls ripped out of schools by the same men to whom they are sold like cheap beef? And we, like the spawn of Sodom and Gomorrah, wonder why suicides happen in these circumstances. There have been several suicides recently that are linked to “romantic” relationships. Many involved underage girls. There are so many girls who are pregnant at twelve! Some fellow kills himself. It is all horrible, but the relationship has had the “approval” and “permission” of “parents” to be “together.” But this “permission” and “approval” is given by parents for a child to be a victim of statutory rape!! Who, then, is culpable and thusly comes under the firm hand of the law?

Why is it that no one seems to see the warning signals to murder and domestic violence and marital rape? And the end is either suicide or irreversible psychological damage. We could build a million psychiatric hospitals, but, as a nation, we need to root out this disease, which begins with the low premium to which we hold our girls and women. Pills and feeble chats will not do it, especially when the victims are taken to these hospitals by the very people who are the culprits in the first place.

No parent should be allowed to sell children! No man should be allowed to buy a child. The law must take its firm grip and handcuff these criminals.

Incidentally (or not so incidentally), I have been floating the idea of a Special Victims Unit since 2010. Various ministers and senior officials have taken this up with words at various forums, but we need concrete action in more rapid fashion.

Jordan ends rapists’ marriage loophole

When is Malaysia going to follow suit and treat a rapist as a criminal and not a potential husband for the very woman or girl he raped. Save tax payers money, after the rapist is found guilty of rape, cut off his penis and done away with future rapes he may commit

Hanging wedding dresses in Beirut, Lebanon

[BBC] – A law which protected rapists from punishment if they married their victims has been scrapped in Jordan.

The Jordanian cabinet revoked Article 308 on Sunday, after years of campaigning by women’s activists, as well as Muslim and Christian scholars and others. The law had meant rapists could avoid a jail term in return for marrying their victim for at least three years.

Its supporters said the law protected a victim’s honour and reputation.

‘A dream come true’

But last year, it was amended so a rapist could only use the loophole to marry his victim if she was aged between 15 and 18 and the attack was believed to have been consensual. Then in February, a royal committee suggested the law should be scrapped in its entirety.

At the time, the move was welcomed by activist Lailla Naffa as a “dream that has come true,” according to the Jordan Times. However, the fight to end the loophole in other Middle Eastern countries is far from over.

As Jordan was abolishing Article 308, Lebanese activists were hanging wedding dresses along Beirut’s famous sea front, in protest against Lebanon’s version of the law. They are hopeful it will be scrapped in May, and activists hope the repeal in both countries could lead to change in countries like Iraq, the Philippines and Tunisia, where similar laws exist, according to Equality Now.

A spokesman for the human rights group, which fights for women and children across the world, told the BBC: “With rape and sexual abuse impacting nearly a billion women and girls over their lifetimes, a repeal in Jordan and Lebanon would be crucial examples showing how change is possible in the Arab region, and around the world, for countries with similar exemptions.

“Morocco, Egypt and Ethiopia have closed similar loopholes, and amendments are pending in Bahrain.”

YOU DON’T WORRY, PAKATAN CAN WIN WITHOUT PAS’ HELP: DR M TELLS M’SIANS, POINTS TO LARGE MALAY CROWDS AT OPPOSITION RALLIES

Hope the old man is right and he would not have made the boast without an educate guess and methodical calculations. Old man have not been wrong before on his projections but a total failure in choosing his heirs as Prime Ministers

PETALING JAYA – Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad is confident that Pakatan Harapan (PH) can win the next general election (GE14) without PAS.

He based his confidence on the large Malay crowds drawn to PH events.

Speaking at a press conference at the party’s headquarters today, Mahathir said at PH events, the Malay crowd could number between 12,000 and 15,000, even though according to TV3, only 200 Malays had attended these events.
The former prime minister added the positive reception also showed that Malays, especially Umno members, supported PPBM and PH.

“But we see many Malays who come out (for the events) and we see that many of them are from Umno.

“So it seems even Umno members are interested in us. That’s why we are confident we can win,” said Mahathir.
Yesterday, at PAS’ 63rd muktamar, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said PAS wouldn’t be cooperating with PPBM, a party he described as “directionless”.

“We have done an evaluation and found that PPBM is a party without direction. There’s no direction and it’s not even clear who their leader is.”

Earlier today, the PAS muktamar passed a resolution for PAS to also terminate its political cooperation with PKR, citing PKR’s failure to adhere to conditions of their political cooperation.
Previously, PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin had voiced confidence that PPBM could be the “glue” between PAS and PH.

PAS has repeatedly said it wouldn’t work with any party which had ties to its bitter rivals, DAP and Amanah, which are part of PH.

Before this, PPBM and PAS had been engaged in talks over possible cooperation and had even set up a joint technical committee on the matter.

Last night, Mahathir, on the sidelines of a ceramah in Kuala Lumpur, said he accepted PAS’ decision to not work with PPBM.

Malaysian Women Looking For ISIS Lovers Have Lost Millions Of Ringgit And Left Stranded At Turkish Border

These women must be the ones who love extreme sex with handcuffs , blindfolds , chop of the head types and on chopping of heads I beg to defer the head on the shoulder or the blind head with a mouth between the legs and also with barbed wire whips with a camel or goat thrown in for group sex.

Is Malaysian Government sending the Prime Minister luxurious jet to pick these women and send then straight to Sri Perdana for some butt spanking for being naughty ladies?

Twenty Malaysian women, looking for love with Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants, have been duped of millions of ringgit and left stranded on the Turkey-Syria border.

Counter Terrorism Division principal assistant director Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay told Utusan Malaysia that over 20 women had sold houses and cars and used bank loans to finance their trips to Syria via Turkey.

“When they arrived in Istanbul, they and other foreigners, including Indonesians, were taken by minders to a halfway house. They surrendered their passports and mobile phones to these minders to avoid being detected,” Ayob was quoted as saying.

The duped women were asked for money to cover expenses for lodging and food. Some stayed in Turkey for up to five months. Their dreams of reaching Syria and marrying militants were dashed when they ran out of money.

These minders are said to be working closely with Malaysian ISIS militant Mohamad Wanndy Mohamad Jedi to extract large amount of monies from the women.

“Once their monies are all taken, these caretakers will then chase these women away,” Ayob said. “These minders find ways to get these women to leave the house.”

The women are taken to the Turkey-Syria border and abandoned, usually at Hatay and Gaziantep, where travellers who might be crossing to join ISIS are closely monitored.

The victims, who went in search of ISIS lovers, were apprehended by the authorities for overstaying and deported back to Malaysia.

Pakistan mutilates bodies of 2 Indian soldiers near LoC, Army pounds Pak posts in retaliation

The Indian Army called the firing by Pakistan forces unprovoked and said there will be an appropriate response to it.

The bodies of two Indian soldiers were mutilated by the Pakistan Army along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Krishna Ghati sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
In retaliation, the Indian Army has pounded Pakistan Army posts along the LoC .
In a ceasefire violation, the Pakistan Army today opened rocket and mortar firing on two forward posts along the Line of Control. Pakistan's Border Action Team (BAT) attacked an Indian joint patrol team and mutilated its two soldiers.

Calling the firing "unprovoked", the Northern Command in a statement said, "In an unsoldierly act by the Pakistan Army, the bodies of two of our soldiers in the patrol were mutilated. Such despicable act of Pakistan Army will be appropriately responded".
The statement issued by the Northern Command said that even as firing was opened on the Indian posts, "a BAT (Border Action Team) action was launched on a patrol operating in between the two posts".
HOW INDIAN TROOPS WERE ATTACKED
According to sources, local intelligence was available to Indian troops about possible landmines being laid out by Pakistani operatives near the Line of Control.  When a team reached the forward defence line to check for the mines, they came under the attack from the Pakistan Army.
The Pakistan Army is believed to have entered 200 metres inside the Indian territory along the Line of Control.
The combined patrol team of BSF and Army was ambushed near Nangi Tekri area. The Pakistan Army fired rocket-propelled grenades and followed it up with mortar firing and mutilation of Indian troops.
Head constable Prem Sagar of the Border Security Force and Naib Subedar Paramjit Singh of 22 Sikh Regiment were mutilated by the Pakistan Army. Another BSF soldier Rajendra Singh received splinter injuries.
PAKISTAN INVITING ITS OWN RUIN
Former home secretary and BJP MP R K Singh said that the manner in which Pakistan's BAT treated Indian soldiers, the Indian Army should pay back in the same coin. "They mutilated the bodies of our two soldiers, we should mutilate the bodies of four Pakistani soldiers," the BJP MP said.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that Pakistan is inviting its own destruction, adding that the Indian Army would give a befitting reply to the attack.
A WAY TO LET TERRORIST SLIP IN?
The unprovoked firing at Indian posts comes a day after Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa visited areas along the Line of Control. During his visit, the Pakistan Army chief accused India of "state-sponsored" terrorism in Kashmir.
According to sources, at least 100 terrorists of Laskar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad are waiting for an opportunity to enter India.
The firing is reportedly a means through which Pakistan is providing cover to terrorists so that they can cross the border and enter India, said sources.

Call for independent inquiry on Actress Sujatha’s Death

Wednesday, August 01, 2007

Manikavasam of Justice party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) has called Malaysian Inspector of General of Police to setup an independent inquiry commission on the strange death of actress Sujatha, according to Makkal Osai daily, today.

Meanwhile, Malaysiakini reported that a senior minister’s son was questioned over her death for two hours without directly referring to Vellpaari, Work’s minister’s son, who had extramarital affair with Sujatha. Sources say that she has consumed paraquat, a weed killer pesticide used in plantations. What pushed her to take her life is unknown and many wonders if there is a cover-up.

Foul play in Malaysian Actress Death
Saturday, 28 July 2007
Malaysian actress Sujatha, age 29, died a few weeks ago at Klang general hospital. Local newspapers did not specify the cause of her death but a police report has been made yesterday by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (Justice Party) implicating Vellpaari, Works Minister Samy Vellu’s son, on her untimely death.

Sujatha was also the personal secretary of Vellpaari, managing director of Maika Holdings before her death. Sources say both of them were romantically involved for along time, though Vellpaari was married to popular singer Shaila Nair, and Sujatha pressed Vellpaari to marry her.

Police chief Kumaran’s threat

Monday, August 6, 2007

After Vell Paari, works Minister Samy Vellu’s son, threatened to sue those who link him to Actress Sujathas suicide, now it is district police chief Kumaran’s turn. According to Malaysikini, he is contemplating to take action on those who made defamatory statements against him.
This police chief was sitting on the case for more than a month doing nothing. Sujatha was not only a well known actress but personal assistant to Vell Paari and having romantic relationship.

ACP Kumaran
Any ordinary police man ought to know that this case should be thoroughly investigated especially when high profile personalities are involved. Police chief Kumaran did not until a police report was made. The taking over of the case by Malaysian police headquarters is evident of his total failure.

Malaysia Nanban 06/08/07
Justice for Actress

Sunday, August 5, 2007

Two of the three Tamil newspapers, Makkal Osai and Malaysia Nanban, were highlighting Sujatha’s death daily in their front page almost every day, last week. Tamil Nesan has been playing a low profile on the issue. However, there are no new breakthroughs in the police investigation and the dailies are merely rehashing the same old facts.

According to Makkal Osai, Malaysian Headquarters police (Bukit Aman) have inspected Sujatha’s condominium and taken finger prints. This is, after all, more then one month after Sujatha’s death. So far, the dailies failed to get any information from Sujatha’s parents, relatives and her close friends.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Nanban questioned how Sujatha was able to get paraquat, a weed killer poison used in plantations, which is a controlled item where the buyers can be traced.

Thousands of spectators gathered on Calton Hill in the Scottish capital to watch drummers, fire dancers, physical theatre and a large bonfire. The event, first organised in the mid-1980s, marks the ending of winter and is a revival of the ancient Celtic and Pagan festival of Beltane, the Gaelic name for the month of May. During the event , the Green Man is killed as god of winter and reborn as spring to consort with the May Queen.

It was the first time in the modern era a European power would be defeated by an Asian foe

Russia's Tsar Nicholas II chose to contine war rather than agree to 'humiliating peace'

US President Theodore Roosevelt would later win a Nobel Peace Prize for brokering treaty which ended war

By Dave Burke For Mailonline

The sight of Russian warships sinking will make uncomfortable viewing in modern-day Moscow, but a fascinating set of pictures give an insight into one of the heaviest defeats the country suffered in the 20th century.

The rare images show Russian soldiers marching past their fallen comrades in the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905, and large crowds celebrating Japan's victories.

Russia lost almost all of its Pacific and Baltic Fleet during the fighting in a conflict which broke out over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria, China and Korea.

The Russo-Japanese war would be a humiliating defeat for Russia, with its reputation as a great power severely dented as a result. The two nations went to war over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria, China and Korea. This image shows sunken warships in a conflict which cost Russia most of its Pacific and Baltic fleets

Russian soldiers gaze at heaps of their fallen comrades following the Battle of Port Arthur in February 1904. The battle marked the start of a war in which Russia would suffer massive losses, and began with a surprise night attack by a squadron of Japanese destroyers at the port in Manchuria

A Russian battery is pictured during the siege of Port Arthur, the longest and bloodiest battle of the war. Between August 1904 and January 1905 Russia suffered more than 30,000 casualties, and defeat was a decisive blow in the war +13

Losses on both sides were high, with Japan losing 47,000 military personnel, and between 34,000 and 53,000 Russians losing their lives.

It was the first major victory in the modern era of an Asian power over a European one.

Russia sought a warm-water port on the Pacific Ocean and leased Port Arthur in Liaodong Province from China, but Japan feared a Russian expansion into their sphere of influence.

They offered to recognise Russian dominance in Manchuria in exchange for recognition that Korea was within the Japanese sphere of influence.

Tens of thousands of soldiers on each side of the conflict lost their lives. Russian soldiers are pictured looking into a trench filled with the bodies of Japanese soldiers in the disputed Port Arthur in Manchuria, which was the scene of a prolonged siege in a decisive clash in the Russo-Japanese war

Despite suffering numerous defeats to Japan, Tsar Nicholas II chose to remain engaged in war in order to avoid a 'humiliating peace'. But the decision would prove costly, and Russia became the first European power to lose to an Asian one in the modern era +13

When Russia refused, and demanded Korea north of the 39th parallel to be a neutral buffer zone between the two countries, Japan decided to go to war. They attacked the Russian Eastern Fleet at Port Arthur, China in a surprise attack which began the hostilities.

Despite suffering numerous defeats to Japan, Tsar Nicholas II chose to remain engaged in war in order to avoid a 'humiliating peace'.

The war was eventually concluded with the Treaty of Portsmouth, mediated by US President Theodore Roosevelt. Japan eventually annexed Korea, and had proxy-influence over Manchuria. Russia's reputation as a Great Power was severely dented by the conflict.

22-Year-Old Woman Offered Sex In Exchange For Chicken McNuggets..Say What!?

If it is was a third world country , understandable as people are dirt poor there but in USA , must be business slow for the day and no customers and also a growling empty stomach. Maybe she thought this was a bargain food and money for cigarettes and beer. No luck today she will have the growling stomach as a cell mate for the night

Alex DiReeno, a 22-year-old hooker, was arrested recently in a prostitution sting after she told an undercover cop that her price for oral sex was $25 and…some Chicken McNuggets.

According to cops, DiReeno got into the car of an undercover detective who was parked outside of a gas station. The undercover cop informed DiReeno that he wanted oral sex, which eventually led to bargaining, and that eventually led to the agreement: $25 and some nuggets for oral sex. Keep it classy, DiReeno.

But they didn’t up at a fast-food restaurant to get the chicken nuggets. Instead, the undercover cop drove her to a “take-down location,” where other cops threw the handcuffs on DiReeno. DiReeno was charged with prostitution and possession of drug paraphernalia.

But don’t worry, folks. DiReeno was also sentenced last month to three years probation after pleading guilty to auto theft and possession of drug paraphernalia. This woman is on a role!

No word yet if she ever got her nuggets, but here’s hoping she eventually got them the normal way: begging her parents to buy some for her.

North Korea hints at nuclear tests 'any moment

War coming soon in North East Asia with nuclear test. Ma Dog North Korea leader insist in pushing the envelope to the maximum and what to see who blinks first and President Trump the leader of the most powerful nation cannot be to be seen as whim.

Who will strike first?

China first strike to neutralize North Korea military and leadership
North Korea attack of South Korea to create panic and war on multi fronts
American pre-empt strike to try to neutralize the North Korea armed forces nuclear and military capabilities
Who knows, nobody know except God and the Devil knows

The million dollar question is how is China going to react and fight with which side.

Says it will 'bolster our force to the maximum' after US installed anti-missile system on South Korean golf course

North Korea has issued fresh threats to carry out a sixth nuclear test and warned it is ready to 'bolster the nuclear force to the maximum' after a THAAD missile system (left) was deployed in the South. The defense system has drawn protests from locals, who fear it will be a target for Kim Jong-un (top right), and upset China over fears its powerful radar will be used to spy on them. Donald Trump has said a 'major, major conflict' is possible in the region if Jong-un does not give up his ambition to develop a nuclear weapon capable of hitting mainland America (pictured bottom right, North Korean missiles that many believe could hit the US.)

See below a suppose Raja Petra WhatsApp group message calling for genocide of Malaysian Chinese.  From his safe haven in United Kingdom and as a British citizen. He is becoming more of a hate preacher against whoever who do not agree with him or his political masters in Malaysia. Are the Scotland Yard keeping an eye with him and intend to haul him up for his instigating the Malays in Malaysia to carry out Genocide against the Malaysian Chinese. Is UK government going to let him do the instigation and only arrest and charge him after the genocide has occurred in Malaysia.

Look at what happen when one Hutu catholic priest instigated the majority Hutus to slaughter the minority Tutsi people on the radio and hundreds of thousands of Tutsi people were killed in Rwanda. Is the world going to sit back and let him do his hate preaching?

'I want to get my hands dirty again'

War monger is making come back and another major Middle East war in the making to boost the business of weapon manufacturers and also big business and good times for Big Oil. What is his hidden agenda?

Tony Blair RETURNS to politics 20 years after winning landslide general election to save UK from bad Brexit deal

Tony Blair has revealed he is to return to politics 20 years after beating John Major to Downing Street and has vowed to get his hands dirty as he looks to shake up the Brexit deal. The former prime minister has been away from politics for a decade, but said the decision to leave the European Union has motivated him to get back in the game. Despite he lingering anger over his decision to send troops to Iraq during his tenure, he wants to be involved in policy-making in the country. He said: 'This Brexit thing has given me a direct motivation to get more involved in the politics. You need to get your hands dirty and I will.' Talking of Brexit, he likened the single market to the Champions League of trading agreements, while a free trade agreement would be the equivalent to League One.

Selangor PAS assemblymen and supporters to defect to Amanah Selangor very soon ?

Now that PAS 2017 General assembly is over and the Political battle lines are already drawn in the sand and in Red,

PAS have always been a poor man’s party and the party members are content with their life style. Sudden riches can alter a poor man and his family’s destiny.

PAS Selangor never taught that they will win any State assembly seats in Malaysian General Elections GE12/PRU-12 and become part of the state government. This was beyond their compassion and dreams. If they would have told others, the others would have thought that these Selangor PAS are nutcases.

With the state assembly seats come a fixed comfortable salary, allowances, perks and also contracts for them and their cronies (Supporters). They can plan their lives, buy a house, a nice car, money in the bank as savings, and send kids to good private universities to prepare them in future. Wives have some pocket money, money to buy clothes and money for a very comfortable life. All come with a catch, that they must keep on winning their State assembly seats at the elections and their income / salary become consistent and can meet their monthly commitments if they lose the State assembly seats, no more fixed monthly income. These PAS assemblymen are watching in horror at what PAS national is doing the they are cutting their own noses to spite Pakatan Harapan. These assembly members see the real danger to theirs and families wellbeing. UMNO is not going to give PAS a walk over in the Seats PAS is contesting and in a three corner contest UMNO or PH will gain either the most or second most votes and PAS will be last.

Now that PAS have official cut of ties with all the PH political parties , the state assembly men in Selangor PAS are for the first time sitting up and pondering about their and family’s wellbeing. Money in a form of a monthly salary is most important.

I suspect that at least 10 out of 13 PAS state assemblymen have already starts secret negotiations with PH on retaining their seats and joining Amanah as to secure their seats. All will not be successful as Amanah already have candidates in place and a trade of for some contesting and some not contesting but getting a good position / job in Selangor GLC’s.

Got this from one of my WhatsApp groups

The moment PAS orders it Selangor state assemblymen to quite PH Selangor government, the official cross or exodus of Selangor PAS assemblymen to Amanah will start and UMNO will watch from the sidelines in horror. This will have a herd mentality on the balance of the PAS assembly men and members to dissolve their Party divisions in Selangor and joining Amanah in mass defections. This is going to happen very soon and depends how hard and fast PAS national pushes PAS Selangor to quit PH Selangor government

This is going to be a very demoralizing on UMNO and the remnants’ of PAS as PH may just pull the impossible in Selangor state elections by winning all the state seats and delivering a duck to BN-UMNO-PAS.

As I write the ground is already on the shift in Selangor and these PAS Selangor assembly men will not go for a lump sum bribe from UMNO as this will bring a stigma of shame for them, their families, friends and their generations. Save bet is a monthly salary and allowances will suffice for them?

This same model will follow PAS in other states.

Delusional disorder is a mental illness in which the patient presents with delusion and a classical case study of a Political Party in Malaysia suffering acutely for this disease

Delusional disorder is a mental illness in which the patient presents with delusions, but with no accompanying prominent hallucinations, thought disorder, mood disorder, or significant flattening of affect. Delusions are a specific symptom of psychosis. Delusions can be "bizarre" or "non-bizarre" in content; non-bizarre delusions are fixed false beliefs that involve situations that could potentially occur in real life, such as being followed or poisoned .Apart from their delusions, people with delusional disorder may continue to socialize and function in a normal manner and their behavior does not necessarily generally seem odd. However, the preoccupation with delusional ideas can be disruptive to their overall lives. For the diagnosis to be made , auditory and visual hallucinations cannot be prominent, though olfactory or tactile hallucinations related to the content of the delusion may be present.

To be diagnosed with a delusional disorder, the delusion(s) cannot be due to the effects of a drug, medication, or general medical condition, and delusional disorder cannot be diagnosed in an individual previously properly diagnosed with schizophrenia. A person with delusional disorder may be high functioning in daily life. Recent and comprehensive metaanalyses of scientific studies point to an association between a deterioration in aspects of IQ in psychotic patients, in particular perceptual reasoning.

According to German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin, patients with delusional disorder remain coherent, sensible and reasonable.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) defines six subtypes of the disorder characterized as erotomanic (believes that someone is in love with them), grandiose (believes that they are the greatest, strongest, fastest, richest, and/or most intelligent person ever), jealous (believes that the love partner is cheating on them), persecutory (delusions that the person or someone to whom the person is close is being malevolently treated in some way), somatic (believes that they have a disease or medical condition), and mixed, i.e., having features of more than one subtype. Delusions also occur as symptoms of many other mental disorders, especially the other psychotic disorders.

The DSM-IV, and psychologists, generally agree that personal beliefs should be evaluated with great respect to cultural and religious differences, since some cultures have widely accepted beliefs that may be considered delusional in other cultures.

Diagnosis of a specific type of delusional disorder can sometimes be made based on the content of the delusions. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) enumerates seven types:

Erotomanic type (erotomania): delusion that another person, often a prominent figure, is in love with the individual. The individual may breach the law as he/she tries to obsessively make contact with the desired person.

Grandiose type: delusion of inflated worth, power, knowledge, identity or believes himself/herself to be a famous person, claiming the actual person is an impostor or an impersonator.

Jealous type: delusion that the individual's sexual partner is unfaithful when it is untrue. The patient may follow the partner, check text messages, emails, phone calls etc. in an attempt to find "evidence" of the infidelity.

Persecutory type:

This delusion is a common subtype. It includes the belief that the person (or someone to whom the person is close) is being malevolently treated in some way. The patient may believe that he/she has been drugged, spied upon, harassed and so on and may seek "justice" by making police reports, taking court action or even acting violently.
Somatic type: delusions that the person has some physical defect or general medical condition
Mixed type: delusions with characteristics of more than one of the above types but with no one theme predominating.

Unspecified type: delusions that cannot be clearly determined or characterized in any of the categories in the specific types,

Signs and symptoms,

The following can indicate a delusion

The patient expresses an idea or belief with unusual persistence or force.

That idea appears to have an undue influence on the patient's life, and the way of life is often altered to an inexplicable extent.

Despite his/her profound conviction, there is often a quality of secretiveness or suspicion when the patient is questioned about it.

The individual tends to be humorless and oversensitive, especially about the belief.

There is a quality of centrality: no matter how unlikely it is that these strange things are happening to him, the patient accepts them relatively unquestioningly.

An attempt to contradict the belief is likely to arouse an inappropriately strong emotional reaction, often with irritability and hostility.

The belief is, at the least, unlikely, and out of keeping with the patient's social, cultural and religious background.

The patient is emotionally over-invested in the idea and it overwhelms other elements of their psyche.

The delusion, if acted out, often leads to behaviors which are abnormal and/or out of character, although perhaps understandable in the light of the delusional beliefs.

Individuals who know the patient observe that the belief and behavior are uncharacteristic and alien.

Additional features of delusional disorder include the following
It is a primary disorder.

It is a stable disorder characterized by the presence of delusions to which the patient clings with extraordinary tenacity.

The illness is chronic and frequently lifelong.

The delusions are logically constructed and internally consistent.

The delusions do not interfere with general logical reasoning (although within the delusional system the logic is perverted) and there is usually no general disturbance of behavior. If disturbed behavior does occur, it is directly related to the delusional beliefs.

The individual experiences a heightened sense of self-reference. Events which, to others, are nonsignificant are of enormous significance to him or her, and the atmosphere surrounding the delusions is highly charged.

PAS’ target of four states and 40 parliamentary seats not ‘empty talk’

PAS party strategist Dr Zuhdi Marzuki says the party's research backs up its claims that it will win up to five states and 40 parliamentary seats in the next elections. — The Malaysian Insight pic, May 1, 2017.
PAS is confident of being able to win four to five states and 40 parliamentary seats, based on its extensive internal studies, said party strategist Dr Zuhdi Marzuki.
“When the president says we target 40 parliamentary seats and we can rule four to five states, it’s not empty talk, but based on our own studies,” Zuhdi said at the party’s 63rd assembly in Alor Star, Kedah.
Zuhdi, however, did not reveal the results of these studies which included about 100 simulations and analyses from several of its think-tanks.
These research centres are based in Kelantan, Terengganu, Perak and Sabah.

“We looked at both scenarios, straight fights and three-cornered fights. At the same time, we do not disregard the studies of other think-tanks.” — May 1, 2017.

Champion of the downtrodden

From village hero, V David rose to become a pillar of the Malaysian workers’ movement

by K George Aliran Monthly

Born on 26 August 1932 in a squatter settlement at the 3rd mile, Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur, V David started his life in abject poverty. His father, S Vethamuthu, had a small farm and a herd of cattle for survival. As he grew older, David had to help his father by going to houses around the area delivering milk daily. Despite this, he managed to complete his Senior Cambridge. As the years rolled by, his mother became a widow, burdened with the task of bringing up her only son.

Under the circumstances, it was only natural that mother and son became inseparably close. Even after his mother’s demise, she remained close to his heart until the last day of his life. It is no exaggeration to say that David used to visit his mother’s grave very often — not only every year on the occasion of her birthday, death anniversary, etc but whenever he stood for election, started a union, contested for leadership position and even before embarking on other important event. To him, she was a saint whose blessing he sought before undertaking any venture.

In 1954, he enrolled with the University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA for a course in Economics, Political Science and Industrial Relations. At the same time, he also attended a course on Labour Unions organised by the AFL-CIO, the American National Trade Union Centre. Even when he was deeply involved in trade union and political activities, he continued his tertiary education. In 1980, he obtained a Masters in Commerce degree from the University of New Delhi. A few years later his thesis on international relations was accepted by Pacific Western University, California, USA, which awarded him a doctorate.

Compassion for the downtrodden

Even when David was in his teens, he was a hero in his village. The villagers often sought his advice and guidance. David’s compassion for the poor and downtrodden was natural, simply because of the condition in which he grew up. His first venture in 1953 was to form a trade union known as the Selangor Mill Workers Union (SMWU), which integrated with the Selangor Factory Workers Union. In 1955, the union’s name was changed to the National Union of Factory and General Workers (NUFGW). It was one of the “General Unions” that was recognised by the British colonial rulers.

On 31 August 1957, Malaya became independent. The NUFGW became so strong and popular under the leadership of the youthful V David that even the workers in the plantation industry preferred to be members of the new union. The Alliance government of independent Malaya detained David and amended the labour law to ensure the automatic deregistration of all existing general unions at that time. Since then, our 'democratic' government has never granted registration of general unions! David was subsequently released.

He became even more popular - loved by the working masses and disliked by the capitalists. Soon, he was approached by the Transport Workers Union (TWU) to be its executive secretary. He travelled by truck and enrolled thousands and thousands of workers in the transport industry. Soon he was elected the General Secretary of the TWU and held on to that position unchallenged even after he had suffered two strokes.

Youngest MP at 26

In the 1959 General Election, David, already a member of the Labour Party, which formed a coalition with other opposition parties known as the Socialist Front, contested and won, becoming a Member of Parliament for Bangsar as well as Selangor State Assembly member. At 26, he was the youngest Member of Parliament – bold, vigorous and committed.

By mid 1960s, the registration of the Labour Party was cancelled. Its leaders like Dr Tan Chee Khoon, Veerappan, Tan Pock Kin, David and others decided to seek the registration of another party. I was then the General Secretary of the Federation of Armed Forces Civilian Staff Union as well as Vice-President of the MTUC and of CUEPACS. Like David, I too believed that trade unions had to involve themselves in politics. It was not an unusual phenomenon but a fact that was visible all over the world.

I was invited by the group to join and help with the formation of Gerakan. It was during this period that I grew closer to David. I am proud to claim that both of us knew what poverty was and that our commitment to struggle for the welfare of workers became a passion. David stood on a Gerakan ticket in the General Elections in 1969 and was elected to Parliament as MP for Datuk Keramat in Penang. However, being a civil servant and father of three young children, I decided to carry on with my job and union activity.

Gerakan became a very popular party and received multiracial support. In the May 1969 General Election, the party captured the state of Penang and formed the government with Dr Lim Chong Eu as Chief Minister. But within two years, it was embroiled in a leadership crisis, resulting in Dr Lim taking full control of Gerakan. Professor Alatas, Dr Tan Chee Khoon, David and other leaders left Gerakan and formed Pekemas, which contested in the 1974 General Election. Out of over 90 candidates, only Dr Tan Chee Khoon retained his seat as the MP for Kepong constituency. Pekemas did not last long. Subsequently, David joined the DAP.

He was elected to parliament on the DAP ticket in 1978 for Damansara and was successfully returned in 1986 and 1990 for Puchong. But in 1995, David did not contest because of health reasons.

Indomitable spirit

While holding the post of TWU General Secretary, he represented the union in the Executive Council and the Working Committee of the MTUC. He was elected as one of its Vice-Presidents in 1971 - a position he held until 1976. Two years later, he was elected the Secretary General of the MTUC. In 1979, he was elected to the governing body of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). He held on to this prestigious position and the post of Secretary General of the MTUC until 1992.

Apart from the above positions, he was also a Council Member of the International Transport Federation and President of the World Tamil Federation for some time.

David became the “guest” of the government for the fourth time in October 1987 along with 105 others - innocent victims of Operation Lalang under the obnoxious Internal Security Act. This time he had to spend 222 days in the Kamunting Detention Camp. It could not break his indomitable spirit which remained intact. All his life he committed himself to the struggle for workers’ rights, social justice, freedom and democracy. He had been a persistent critic of the government’s capitalistic policies and its unjust refusal to grant citizenship to the Indian plantation workers who were born in this country in spite of their pioneering economic contribution to this nation.

In his final three years, he became bed-ridden. His wife, Grace Sivapakiam, took special care of her husband until the last day on July 10, 2005. Their only son, Norman David 22, who is studying medicine in Bangalore, India, was present at the time of his father’s demise.

V David will be remembered as a pillar of the Malaysian workers’ movement for many years to come. His memory will be cherished and recalled with fondness as someone who had given his best for the workers and who had sacrificed the best part of his life in the struggle to uplift the poor and the downtrodden.

Origins of Labour Day

Labour Day has its roots in an 1872 printers’ strike in Toronto. Fighting for a nine-hour work day, the strikers’ victory was a major milestone in the changing relations between Canadian workers and their government.

Nine Hour Movement

In a time when the news of labour "strife" is dominated by disputes between millionaire athletes and billionaire owners, history provides a useful perspective on a period when working people had to fight to work less than 12 hours a day. The "Nine Hour Movement" began in Hamilton, Ontario, and then spread to Toronto, where its demands were taken up by the Toronto Typographical Union.
In 1869, the union sent a petition to its members' employers requesting a weekly reduction in hours per week to 58, placing itself among the leading advocates in the industrialized world for a shorter work week. Their request was refused outright by the owners of the printing shops, most vehemently by George Brown of The Globe.
Strike is Called
By 1872, the union's stand had hardened from a request to a demand, to a threat to strike. The employers called the demand for a shorter work week "foolish," "absurd," and "unreasonable." As a result, on 25 March 1872 the printers went on strike.
On 15 April, a demonstration was held to show solidarity among the workers of Toronto. A parade of some 2,000 workers marched through the city, headed by marching bands. By the time the parade reached Queen's Park, the sympathetic crowd had grown to 10,000.
The employers fought the strikers by bringing in replacement workers from small towns. George Brown launched a counterattack by launching a legal action against the union for "conspiracy." Brown's action revealed the astonishing fact that according to the laws of Canada, union activity was indeed considered a criminal offense. Under the law, which dated back to 1792, police arrested and jailed the 24 members of the strike committee.

Powerful Ally

Brown, however, overplayed his hand. Prime Minister John A. Macdonald had been watching the Nine Hour Movement “with curious interest, his big nose sensitively keen," wrote historian Donald Creighton, "like an animal's for any scent of profit or danger." The scent of profit came from the fact that Macdonald's old Liberal rival George Brown had made himself a hated man among the workers of Canada.
Macdonald was quick to capitalize. In Ottawa, he spoke to a crowd at city hall, promising to wipe the "barbarous laws" restricting labour from the books. Macdonald then came to the rescue of the imprisoned men and on 14 June passed the Trade Unions Act, which legalized and protected union activity. Macdonald's move not only embarrassed his rival Brown but also earned him the enduring support of the working class.

Legacy of the Strike

For the strikers themselves, the short-term effects were very damaging. Many lost their jobs and were forced to leave Toronto. The long-term effects, however, were positive. After 1872, almost all union demands included the nine-hour day and the 54-hour week. Thus the Toronto printers were pioneers of the shorter work week in North America. Meanwhile, campaigns for an eight-hour day were already gaining in popularity, and would eventually take hold, in the United States.

The fight of the Toronto printers had a second, lasting legacy. The parades held in support of the Nine Hour Movement and the printers' strike led to an annual celebration. In 1882, American labour leader Peter J. McGuire witnessed one of these labour festivals in Toronto. Inspired, he returned to New York and organized the first American "labor day" on 5 September of the same year. Throughout the 1880s, pressure built in Canada to declare a national labour holiday and on 23 July 1894, the government of Prime Minister John Thompson passed a law making Labour Day official. A huge Labour Day parade took place in Winnipeg that year. It stretched some five kilometres. The tradition of a Labour Day celebration quickly spread across Canada and the continent. It had all begun in Toronto with the brave stand of the printers' union.
