Gangrene - Be alert as it is a major killer

Gangrene is a condition that occurs when body tissue dies. It is caused by a loss of blood supply due to an underlying illness, injury, and/or infection. Fingers, toes, and limbs are most often affected, but gangrene can also occur inside the body, damaging organs and muscles. There are different types of gangrene and all require immediate medical attention.

Gangrene Causes

Blood plays a very important role in your health. Not only does it transport oxygen and nutrients throughout your body to feed cells, it delivers disease-fighting antibodies that protect your body from infection. When blood cannot travel freely throughout the body, your cells cannot survive, infection can develop, and tissue can die from gangrene. Any condition that affects blood flow increases your risk of gangrene, including:

Diabetes
Atherosclerosis
Peripheral arterial disease
Smoking
Trauma or serious injury
Obesity
Raynaud's phenomenon (a condition in which the blood vessels that supply the skin become intermittently narrowed)
Weakened immune system

Gangrene Types

There are two main types of gangrene:

Dry gangrene:

More common in people with blood vessel disease,  diabetes, and autoimmune diseases, dry gangrene usually affects the hands and feet. It develops when blood flow to the affected area is impaired, usually as a result of poor circulation. In this type, the tissue dries up and may be brown to purplish-blue to black in color and often falls off. Unlike other types of gangrene, infection is typically not present in dry gangrene. However, dry gangrene can lead to wet gangrene if it becomes infected.

Wet gangrene:

Unlike dry gangrene, wet gangrene almost always involves an infection. Injury from burns or trauma where a body part is crushed or squeezed can rapidly cut off blood supply to the affected area, causing tissue death and increased risk of infection. The tissue swells and blisters and is called "wet" because of pus. Infection from wet gangrene can spread quickly throughout the body, making wet gangrene a very serious and potentially life-threatening condition if not treated quickly.

Types of wet gangrene include:

Internal gangrene: If gangrene occurs inside the body due to blocked blood flow to an internal organ, then it is referred to as internal gangrene. This is usually related to an infected organ such as the appendix or colon.

Gas gangrene: Gas gangrene is rare but dangerous. It occurs when infection develops deep inside the body, such as inside muscles or organs, usually as a result of trauma. The bacteria that causes gas gangrene, called clostridia, release dangerous toxins or poisons that wreak havoc throughout the body, along with gas which can be trapped within body tissue. As the condition progresses, the skin may become pale and gray, and make a crackling sound when pressed, due to the gas within the tissue. Gas gangrene warrants immediate medical treatment. Without treatment, death can occur within 48 hours.

Fournier's gangrene: Also a rare condition, Fournier's gangrene is caused by an infection in the genital area. Men are affected more often than women. If the infection gets into the bloodstream, a condition called sepsis, it can be life-threatening.

Gangrene Symptoms

You may notice the following symptoms at the site of the dry gangrene:

Dry and shriveled skin that changes color from blue to black and eventually sloughs off
Cold and numb skin
Pain may or may not be present

Symptoms of wet gangrene may include:

Swelling and pain at the site of infection
Change in skin color from red to brown to black
Blisters or sores that produce a bad-smelling discharge (pus)
Fever and feeling unwell
A crackling noise that comes from the affected area when pressed
Internal gangrene usually is painful in the area of the gangrene. For example, a person with gangrene of the appendix or colon would be expected to have severe abdominal pain in the vicinity of the gangrene.

Gangrene Warning

If infection from gangrene gets into the blood, you may develop sepsis and go into septic shock. This can be life-threatening if not treated immediately. Symptoms of sepsis may include:

Low blood pressure
Rapid heartbeat
Shortness of breath
Change in body temperature
Light-headedness
Body pain and rash
Confusion
Cold, clammy, and pale skin
If you think you or a loved one may have sepsis, go to the emergency room immediately.

Gangrene Treatments

Treatment for gangrene involves removing the dead tissue, treating and preventing the spread of infection, and treating the condition that caused gangrene to develop. The sooner you receive treatment, the better your chance of recovery. Depending on the type of gangrene, treatment may include:

Surgery.

Also called debridement, the dead tissue is surgically removed to prevent the spread of infection. In some situations, amputation (removal of the affected limb, finger or toe) may be required.

Maggot therapy.

Believe it or not, maggots still play a role in modern medicine. Maggots provide a non-surgical way to remove dead tissue. When used to treat gangrene, maggots from fly larvae (specially bred in a laboratory so they are sterile) are placed on the wound, where they consume the dead and infected tissue without harming healthy tissue. They also help fight infection and speed up healing by releasing substances that kill bacteria.

Antibiotics.

Antibiotics are used to treat and prevent infections. These are usually given by intravenous injection into a vein.

Oxygen therapy.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be used in some cases of wet gangrene or ulcers related to diabetes or peripheral artery disease. During treatment, the patient is put in a specially designed chamber filled with oxygen at a higher pressure than oxygen found in the outside air. The theory is that this high level of oxygen saturates the blood and encourages healing of the dying tissue. Oxygen therapy may also reduce the growth of bacteria that cannot thrive in an oxygen-rich environment.

In order to prevent gangrene from occurring again, the cause of any blood supply blockage must be determined so that the underlying condition can be treated. Often vascular surgery, such as bypass surgery or angioplasty, is needed to restore blood flow. Medication to prevent blood clots may be used in some cases.

Gangrene is a serious medical condition that requires immediate medical treatment. While most people with dry gangrene recover fully with treatment, gangrene that involves an infection can be life-threatening. The sooner you get treatment, the better your chances of recovery. If you have ongoing and unexplained pain in any area in your body, fever, a wound that is slow to heal, or you notice a change in skin color, make an appointment to see your doctor right away or go to the emergency room.

This ‘Famine Food Truck’ Is Countering Trump’s Budget

Trump’s proposal slashes humanitarian aid as millions face starvation.

By Sarah Ruiz-Grossman

There’s a new food truck driving around Washington this week ― but it’s not serving people lunch. Instead, it’s dishing out information about President Donald Trump’s proposed budget cuts to humanitarian aid.

Staffers from nonprofit Oxfam America are manning a “Famine Food Truck” to spread awareness of food crises leaving 20 million people across Somalia, Nigeria, Yemen, and South Sudan on the brink of starvation.

The group is asking Americans to urge Congress to counter Trump’s proposed budget. Outlined in March and detailed on Tuesday, the document makes major cuts to development and food aid to other nations.

“President Trump’s budget proposal is immoral, short-sighted, and un-American,” Paul O’Brien, Oxfam America’s vice president for policy and campaigns, said in a statement. “If enacted, this budget would mean death for many vulnerable women, children and men around the world.”

“‘America First’ must not mean the rest of the world goes to hell,” O’Brien added.

The U.N. declared a famine in parts of South Sudan in February, and international officials fear that Yemen, Somalia and Nigeria could soon face similar fates. Several factors contribute to these crises, according to Oxfam, including drought, climate change, conflict, and poor governance.

In response to Trump’s proposed foreign aid cuts, staffers on Oxfam’s truck are handing out food boxes. But instead of food, they contain information about the budget, Ben Grossman-Cohen, the group’s global campaign manager, told HuffPost.

The side of the truck lists a number that people can text to help contact political leaders. When I texted “Famine Truck” to 97779, for instance, I was texted a link to a site, which prompted me to input my zip code and address. It then populated with a pre-written email to send to my state lawmakers.

Once someone has texted the number, Oxfam can continue to send prompts to help spur further action, such as calling members of Congress, Grossman-Cohen said.

Trump’s proposed budget would cut $11.5 billion ― or 29 percent ― from the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), according to The Washington Post. It notably eliminates a program that buys food from U.S. farmers for emergency food aid.

The United Nations, meanwhile, has said the world is facing “the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II,” according to NPR, and has requested at least $4.4 billion by July to fight extreme hunger.

Trump “is proposing cuts that we have not seen in recent memory from either party,” Grossman-Cohen said. “There has been strong bipartisan support for international poverty assistance programs ... until now. It is unprecedented.”

Oxfam, which relies mostly on charitable donations for its operations, would not be affected by the budget cuts, Grossman-Cohen said.

Members of Congress from both parties signaled that Trump’s budget had no chance of passage. The lawmakers will draft their own budget soon.

The Famine Food Truck is driving around D.C. until Friday, Grossman-Cohen said. It can be located by searching #FamineFoodTruck on Twitter.

YB what happen to the promises you promised to the Penang voters to win the elections

HERE, GUAN ENG – ARE THESE TRUE? BN ASSEMBLYMAN LISTS DOWN PAKATAN’S ‘BROKEN PROMISES’ IN PENANG

GEORGE TOWN – There are a total of 51 unfulfilled promises since the Pakatan state government came to power in 2008 according to Datuk Muhamad Farid Saad (BN – Pulau Betong).

He listed all of them during his debate on the motion of thanks at the Penang legislature today.

He said there were nine promises in 2008, seven in 2009, three in 2010, four in 2011, five in 2012, 11 in 2013, four in 2014, five in 2015 and three in 2016.

Among them was the non-existent Aerobus and underground railway in 2008, abolishing illegal parking touts and gazetting Pulau Jerejak as a protected area in 2009 and an education hub in Balik Pulau in 2010.

He also cited the failure to resolve flood issues in 2011, a tram system in 2012, water taxis in 2013, a floating tourist village at Teluk Bahang in 2014, a Batu Kawan golf club in 2015 which was cancelled the following year and traffic jam issues.

“Do not be so arrogant,” he said to those present.

Farid also defended the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) Penang government over land sales and listed several deals which he said benefited the state via the collection of quit rent and land conversion premiums.

He said the present state government should instead use state land to benefit the people via planned developments.

Farid called upon the state to be transparent in the number of land deals it had transacted since coming to power.

U.S. Leaks About Manchester Attack Raise Concern In U.K.

U.S. officials anonymously shared information with the media before U.K. authorities approved its release. By Lydia O’Connor

While U.K. officials attempted to control the release of information about Monday night’s deadly terrorist suicide bombing in Manchester, U.S. officials privy to the investigation passed along closely guarded details to the media.

Hours before U.K. authorities divulged such facts as the nature of the attack after an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena, media outlets citing unnamed U.S. officials briefed on the incident had already revealed them. The leaks continued into Tuesday, even after the Manchester police leader asked people not to speculate or share information that doesn’t come from official sources.

A Belgian counterterrorism expert told BuzzFeed News he suspects U.K. authorities are “livid” that U.S. officials disregarded the possibility that prematurely shared details could disrupt the investigation.

“It happens sometimes when a larger partner like America assists on an investigation like this one,” the official, who asked not to be identified because he lacks permission to speak with the press, told BuzzFeed. “You know you are trading the additional resources they bring for a chance of increased leaks. In this case, I suspect the Brits are livid — I know we would be — to have a suspect ID’d before they’re ready, and obviously the recent performance of the Trump administration on leaking sensitive information can’t be far from anyone’s mind if they examine” the situation.

The first of the unofficial details emerged shortly after 1 a.m. Manchester time on Tuesday, when several media outlets, including NBC, Reuters and CNN, reported that U.S. officials said the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber:

Trump praises dirty Harry of Philippines for a Drug war well done

Trump Praised Philippines President Duterte For Drug War That Has Killed 9,000 People
Trump told Duterte he was doing an “unbelievable job on the drug problem,” according to a transcript. Human rights groups disagree.

By Nick Wing

President Donald Trump opened a brief April phone call with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte by commending the strongman’s bloody war on drugs, according to a transcript obtained by The Washington Post and the The Intercept.

“I just wanted to congratulate you because I am hearing of the unbelievable job on the drug problem,” said Trump. “Many countries have the problem, we have a problem, but what a great job you are doing and I just wanted to call and tell you that.”

Trump then criticized former President Barack Obama, who had spoken out against Duterte’s violent anti-drug offensive that killed an estimated 9,000 people, including many small-time users and dealers, in less than a year.

“I understand that and fully understand that and I think we had a previous president who did not understand that, but I understand that and we have spoken about this before,” Trump said, according to the transcript.

A senior Trump administration official told the Post the transcript is accurate, but would not speak on the record about a “leaked” document.

The transcript, provided to the outlets by a source in the Philippines and authenticated by Rappler, a Philippines news outlet that partnered with the Intercept, is further confirmation of Trump’s uncharacteristic friendliness toward autocratic world leaders. It also is likely to raise fears that harsh rhetoric from Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions on what they call the scourge of drug abuse and addiction may give way to more militant action in the future.

In his call with Trump, Duterte similarly called drugs “the scourge of my nation,” according to the transcript.

White House officials initially characterized the April call as “a very friendly conversation,” during which Trump had invited Duterte to visit Washington. That development reportedly surprised White House staffers and drew widespread condemnation from human rights groups, which have accused Duterte of condoning a lawless drug war that has terrorized the nation with a campaign of extrajudicial killings carried out by vigilantes and police officers. Duterte has seemingly embraced this barbaric depiction, comparing himself with Adolf Hitler on a mission to kill millions of drug addicts.

“By essentially endorsing Duterte’s murderous war on drugs, Trump is now morally complicit in future killings,” John Sifton, Asia advocacy director of Human Rights Watch, told The New York Times in April. “Although the traits of his personality likely make it impossible, Trump should be ashamed of himself.”

Michael Collins, deputy director of national affairs at the Drug Policy Alliance, a nonprofit that supports the progressive reform of drug laws, called Trump’s remarks “a new low.”

“It fills me with disgust to see the U.S. president congratulate someone who has overseen the massacre of thousands of his own people in the name of the war on drugs,” Collins said in a statement to HuffPost. “The U.S. government should be urging restraint and respect for human rights; instead Trump gives Duterte’s deadly drug war his seal of approval.”

Trump’s support for Duterte’s tactics also mark a significant departure from the policies of Obama’s administration, which had shown a willingness to confront the Philippines president on the issue of drug enforcement. Ahead of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in September, Obama said he’d bring up the drug war during a planned meeting with Duterte, because he believed in the need to “have due process and to engage in that fight against drugs in a way that’s consistent with basic international norms.”

Duterte responded by calling Obama a Taglog phrase for “son of a bitch,” and the meeting was canceled.

Trump and Duterte, during their call, also discussed escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula, and expressed concerns about North Korean leader Kim Jung Un, whom Trump called a “madman with nuclear weapons.” Days later, Trump said he’d be “honored” to meet with the North Korean dictator.

Trump and Duterte agreed that China would play a pivotal role in keeping North Korea in check, and warding off the possibility of military action.

Philippines' President-Elect Encourages Public to Kill Drug Dealers

“We have a lot of firepower over there. We have two submarines – the best in the world – we have two nuclear submarines – not that we want to use them at all,” said Trump, according to the transcript. “I’ve never seen anything like they are but we don’t have to use this but he could be crazy so we will see what happens.”

This article has been updated to include the comment of Michael Collins.

Repressive Islamic beliefs on women, gays and freedom create social 'chasm' in Britain

REPRESSIVE Islamic beliefs on women, homosexuality and freedom of expression have opened a chasm between British Muslims and the rest of society, according to new research.

Islamic beliefs have opened a chasm between British Muslims and the rest of society
A study carried out by ICM for Channel 4 revealed shocking findings which included:

• Four in 10 Muslims believe a wife should ALWAYS obey her husband;

• More than half UK Muslims believe homosexuality should be illegal

• One in four British Muslims wants Islamic sharia law to replace British law

• Only a third of Muslims would inform police if they knew someone who was getting involved with people who support terrorism in Syria

• One in three Muslims refuse to completely condemn STONING to death in adultery cases

• One in three Muslims refuse to condemn acts of violence against people who mock Mohammed

The revelations form the basis of a Channel 4 documentary, presented by Trevor Phillips, called What British Muslims Really Think.

Is Inbreeding A Root Cause Of Radical Islamic Terror

Many Muslims believe a wife should always obey her husband
And Mr Philips, former Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, draws some grim but honest conclusions.

He says: "The integration of Britain's Muslims will probably be the hardest task we've ever faced. It will require the abandonment of the milk-and-water multiculturalism still so beloved of many, and the adoption of a far more muscular approach to integration.

"I thought Europe's Muslims would gradually blend into Britain's landscape. I should have known better.

Some Muslims want Islamic sharia law to replace British law
"Hearing what British Muslims themselves think, rather than listening to those purporting to speak on their behalf, is critical if we are to prevent the establishment of a nation within our nation.

"Many of the results will be troubling to Muslims and non-Muslims alike - and the analysis of the age profile shows us that the social attitudes revealed are unlikely to change quickly."

Unlike many other surveys of Muslim opinion, which have predominantly been done by phone or online, ICM used face-to-face, in-home research to question a representative sample of 1,000 Muslims across Great Britain.

ICM also used a "control sample" to compare what British Muslims thought with the rest of the British population.

A Channel 4 spokesman said the survey was commissioned to get the views from British Muslims themselves rather than those who claim to speak on their behalf; and, in particular to try to understand why some young Muslims are being drawn to violence.

More than half UK Muslims believe homosexuality should be illegal
The spokesman added: "At the top-line level, the survey suggests that a mainstream British Muslim majority have similar values and attitudes to the wider British public on issues such as support for British institutions and a feeling of belonging to Britain.

"But looking deeper into the results, a chasm develops between those Muslims surveyed and the wider population on attitudes to liberal values on issues such as gender equality, homosexuality and issues relating to freedom of expression. And it also reveals significant differences on attitudes to violence and terrorism."

Flight attendants sue airline over right to pump breast milk while on duty after complaining of 'sex discrimination'

Jo Roby and Stacy Rewitzer claim they were forced to take unpaid leave so they could keep providing children with breast milk

Two flight attendants are suing an airline after claiming they were told they weren't allowed to pump breast milk while on duty.

Jo Roby and Stacy Rewitzer said they were forced to take excessive unpaid leave after having their children so they could keep providing them with breast milk.

The women filed a sex discrimination complaint against Frontier Airlines on Tuesday after saying the Denver-based carrier doesn't offer a set amount of maternity leave.

Employees are instead limited to using sick or vacation days, and any unpaid time they have under the Family Medical Leave Act.

In a blog article detailing her experience, Jo claims that she often worked 10-hour duty days of back-to-back flights, and had no time to pump in between flights. She notes that delaying pumping for more than a few hours can cause pain and infection.

She said: “Frontier has refused to provide me with accommodations related to pregnancy or adequate on-the-job accommodations that would allow me to return to work while continuing to express breast milk."

The complaints were filed one year after four female Frontier pilots submitted similar complaints against the airline with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

That case is still under investigation.

In a statement to NBC News, a Frontier Airlines spokesperson said that the airline's policies and practices adhere to federal and state law.

"Our policies and practices comply with all federal and state laws as well as with the relevant provisions of the collective bargaining agreement between Frontier and its flight attendant group," the statement said.

"We have made good-faith efforts to identity and provide rooms and other secure locations for use by breast-feeding flight attendants during their duty travel."

“I am bringing these charges not just for me and my daughter, but also for future flight attendants and their families,” Jo, a 13-year veteran at Frontier, told the Denver Post.

“No one should have to choose between being the mum she wants to be and pursuing the career she loves.”

And while Stacey said she "loves her job as a flight attendant for Frontier Airlines," she said that she "shouldn’t have to choose between my job or my health and breastfeeding my child."

She added: “I’m proud to stand with the pilots who stood up to Frontier before us.”
