In what can be seen as a tit-for-tat move, former Umno minister Zaid Ibrahim has issued a statement that he is offering RM10,000 as a prize for an essay contest, on how bad a leader our Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is.

“I m offering RM 10,000 for the best essay on Najib Razak as the worst PM this country has ever had. Other terms and conditions apply,” tweeted Zaid today.


This seems to be in response to Umno information chief Annuar Musa offering RM10,000 for the best essay or social media posting on the reasons which make DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang a “racist”.
The social media posting or essay should be titled “LKS is a racist, anti-Islam and a dictator of 51 years”, he told reporters during a press conference at the Parliament building earlier today.

What could possibly go wrong with Malaysian movie-goers enjoying a gay scene in theaters?

Either the Malaysian government is playing coy or it has come to believe the delusion that it is the absolute keeper of the nation’s morality.
This explains the many implausible decisions to ban local works, reading materials and films that go to great length to challenge Putrajaya’s conservatism and refusal to think out of the box.
In 2012, a children’s sex education book ‘How to Talk to Your Child About Sex?’ left the government blushing, enough to get the book banned, claiming its contents “could threaten moral values”.
The 44-page illustrated book, by British author Peter Mayle was published in 1984 with the aim of helping parents explain to children topics such as sex, conception and birth.
Really, will all the misplaced embarrassment do the nation any good? That teachers are ‘uncomfortable’ to broach sex education as a subject is a classic example of how Putrajaya’s endless but futile “blushing” has affected the process of critical thinking.
It is this very “shame” that the government has assigned to the subject of sex education that has led to Malaysians unwilling to come forward and help curb the crime of sexual violence.
Maybe “embarrassment” is also the problem why Malaysians still struggle to address the human anatomy for what it is, instead clutching tightly to euphemisms like ‘private part’ when having to talk about ‘penis’ , ‘vagina’ or even the ‘breast’.
Has the government’s obsession with morality resulted in a destructive spin-off effect, with Malaysians showing less inclination in helping put a stop to ills like child sexual abuse and getting rid of their homophobic tendencies?
Malaysia’s Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) for one wants the society to drop its apathy and help the government tackle child sexual crimes.
Suhakam chairperson Razali Ismail recently said while there was no denying or shrouding the reality that child sexual crimes happen in Malaysia, there however was no reason for the society to be embarrassed to report the crime.
Razali hoped too the government’s move to table the Child Sexual Offences Bill 2017 to specially address child sexual crimes in the current session of parliament would spur Malaysians to lend a helping hand in curbing sexual crimes against children.
Illogical rationale
While Razali opts for optimism, Putrajaya on the other hand remains firm in protecting the ‘morality’ of the people.
So it came as no surprise when it was no-go for Walt Disney’s classic ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in Malaysia, until and unless a gay scene in the movie is ditched by Disney to meet Putrajaya’s morality radar.
So a tug-of-war of ensued between the Malaysian Censorship Board which stood determined in disallowing the 2017 American musical to be screened depicting the homosexual scene.
Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed on Monday (March 20) validated the Censorship Board’s decision demanding that the gay scene be snipped before ‘Beauty and the Beast’ can see the light of day in the local theaters.
The movie was slated for release in Malaysia on March but got stalled after Disney refused to get rid of the gay scene to meet Finas’ demands.
Nur Jazlan refuted that the movie was banned saying the Censorship Board had approved the flick but with censorship which however was not welcomed by Disney.
“The movie was approved with censorship with a PG13 rating. Claims that it was banned is untrue,” Nur Jazlan told the Dewan Rakyat.
“The decision against screening was made by Disney. They appealed against the decision. If they disagreed, it is not the ministry’s fault.”
Then the deputy home minister went on to make a jaw dropping remark, one which no less had him stirring the hornet’s nest.
Nur Jazlan thought the gay scene, the very premise that has left the fate of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ hanging in the balance in Malaysia, inconsequential.
“The scene was not integral to the storyline. You can watch it at home.”
Interestingly, it leaves you wondering what made the deputy home minister conclude the said gay scene was unimportant to the movie’s plot.
Democracy holds sway
For a long time, the state has held veto power over the likes and dislikes that would appease Malaysians. From books to movies, Putrajaya has decided it ‘knows best’ only to end up being reminded time and again that democracy still holds sway in the 59-year-old Malaysia.
The double standard imposed is appalling; the government has no issue with the people watching ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in its entirety in the comfort of their homes but not in outdoor settings.
Why the hypocrisy? Does it boil down to the fact that homosexuality is a crime in Malaysia of that the true and intense diversity of the human life rattles an old guard Putrajaya to the core?
There is nothing detrimental in watching this or any other gay scene, unless a homophobic Putrajaya is confident it will spin the country’s towards apocalypse.
This latest furore involving Disney continues to vouch for the fact that Malaysia indeed has one of the world’s strictest forms of media censorship, all done under the pretext of safeguarding morality.
Is the rise in Islamic conservatism in the country to be blamed for handicapping the Censorship Board in failing to gauge the worthiness of a movie?
Over a decade ago, Malaysia’s film censorship guidelines came under heavy scrutiny where nudity and sex scenes were deemed mortifying to public viewing while kissing scenes and cleavages too left the Censorship Board red in the face.
What could possibly go wrong with Malaysian movie-goers enjoying a gay scene in theaters? Have both the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) and the Home Ministry no understanding of what constitutes sexual orientation?
Or does the Malaysian government subscribe to the primitive thinking that homosexuality is “contagious”?
So much excuse for playing keeper of the nation’s morality; the government has proverbially speaking once again failed to separate the wheat from the chaff while movies like ‘Beauty and the Beast’ go on to smash box-office records with its stupendous earnings.

The ever shrinking pool of Muslim conservatives in Malaysia is showing very clearly and UMNO and PAS are worried that if they go by themselves they will lose their election deposits and best to pool their 20% Malays votes with 10%  PAS 10% Malay votes and discourage the other Malays from voting and cheat on the votes to win the rural parliament seats in PRU 14.

UMNO and PAS are on their last leg of their miserable lives and the vultures are circling more and more every day. UMNO and PAS knows it very well and trying to grab as much wealth before the doom comes for them. MCA, MIC and Gerakan already dead and vultures are feeding on them already. 

0.1% respondents did not know about the RUU 355 that was tabled by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, says Invoke

KUALA LUMPUR: Many Malay-Muslim voters still do not understand the proposed amendments to Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355), which is also widely known as RUU355.

This was concluded today by Invoke Centre for Policy Initiatives, a think tank run by PKR vice president Rafizi Ramli.

Invoke recently conducted a survey on RUU355 and out of 43,030 respondents, only 12,857 people were well informed of the issue.

In a press conference this morning, Rafizi said that 30,173 or 70.1% respondents did not know about the RUU355 that was tabled by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

“In conducting our survey, we contacted 1.1 million Malay-Muslim voters randomly using the Interactive Voice Response system and the survey was done for a week.

“From 1.1 million people, 43,030 voters answered the questions while the rest either hung up or did not respond to any of the questions.

“The 43,030 respondents, when they were asked if they knew anything about RUU355, 70.1% of them said no.

“Only 29.9 % (12,857) said they knew about RUU355 and from the 12,857 people, 5,708 agreed that RUU355 is an important issue that will determine their vote in the next general election.

“A total of 3,240 respondents said the Act is not important while 3,909 did not answer,” Rafizi said.

The RUU355 has been debated intensively in and out of the parliament.

Hadi had tabled a motion in the Dewan Rakyat in November last year to seek the approval of the house to table the private member’s bill, but requested that the detailed explanation on the motion be made at the next meeting of the Dewan Rakyat.

In the initial motion tabled in the Dewan Rakyat in April last year, Hadi sought to remove the limitations in Act 355 but without including the death sentence. The current Act provides for three years’ imprisonment, RM5,000 fine and six strokes of caning.

Rafizi also disclosed that 38.0% or 4,890 callers who knew about RUU 355 refused to respond when asked which was more important, economic issues or the RUU355.

The number was higher than those who said RUU355 was more important than economic issues, said the Pandan MP.

“From those who said they knew about RUU355, they were all asked the same question: Which is more important: economic issues or RUU355?”

“A total of 4,890 did not answer it, it is higher than those who felt RUU355 is more important. 4,484 said it is important.

“A total 3,483 people out of 12,857 said economic issues are important instead of RUU355,” Rafizi added.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi recently announced that the government would be taking over the PAS-sponsored proposed amendments to the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.

PAS responded by saying that the party has no qualms about cooperating and giving way for the Barisan Nasional government to table it in Parliament.

Its president, Abdul Hadi Awang, said the party would, however, like to be given the opportunity to look at the draft of the bill first.

The bill is expected to be tabled in the ongoing parliament sitting, and has been objections from BN component parties.

Selangor PAS is angered by Azmin’s scathing criticism against its Youth chief and vows to show the PKR deputy president the way out

KUALA LUMPUR: Following Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali’s scathing criticism against PAS Youth chief Nik Abduh Nik Aziz, Selangor PAS today vowed to make the PKR leader pay for his folly.

Subang Youth Chief Hanafi Zulkapli said that Azmin’s position as the state MB was due to PAS’ ‘sympathy’

“We view the statement made by Azmin as an irrelevant statement. Azmin must remember that his position in the state was due to our ‘sympathy’.

“Azmin must realise that PAS has a strong grassroots support all over in the state, unlike PKR which does not have a strong force to help the party during election,” the youth chief said, as quoted in PAS organ Harakahdaily,

Recently, Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president, had tweeted to mock Nik Abduh, who he said was daydreaming to take over Selangor.

Without mentioning name, he referred to Nik Abduh as ‘Tok Lebai’, saying that “ada Tok Lebai nak tawan Selangor, di kawasan sendiri kalah tersungkur”. (“A pious man has the intention to take over Selangor but loses heavily in his own backyard”)

Azmin was referring to Nik Abduh’s heavy defeat in the recent Pengkalan Chepa PAS elections to Dr Izani Husin.

Speaking further, Hanafi urged every PAS representative to support a motion to severe ties with PKR in Selangor during the party’s annual meeting next month.

It is also learnt that PAS would be contesting against PKR in the Subang parliamentary seat as well as Kota Damansara and Paya Jaras state seats.

“Selangor PAS Youth and Subang division are standing behind Nik Abduh and will take over Selangor.

“We will show Azmin the exit as well as kicking him out from his Gombak parliamentary seat,” he added.
