Scores hurt in twin-bomb attack at Pattani supermarket

BANGKOK • At least 60 people, among them children, were injured when two bombs went off one after the other at a major supermarket in Thailand's restive south yesterday afternoon.
Of the 60 who were hurt, 21 suffered serious injuries, reported Reuters.
The authorities suspected that Muslim militants, fighting for a separate state in the deep south of the predominantly Buddhist country, were behind the attack outside Big C supermarket in Pattani.
Police said the first device was packed inside a motorcycle in a carpark, while the second was a car bomb. A video posted by a witness on Twitter showed the second bomb detonating in a large fireball, sending bystanders running for cover.
The blast destroyed the front of the supermarket, scattering debris over a wide area and sending up a column of black smoke.
"I heard a very loud explosion," a resident who lives close to the supermarket told Agence France- Presse, requesting anonymity.
"Minutes after that, I heard the sirens of rescue cars and ambulances. I feel bad about it... it happened at a place where people go to buy things."
It is not the first time that the Pattani branch of Big C, Thailand's second-largest hypermarket operator and the only supermarket chain to operate in the southern border provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, has been targeted. An improvised explosive device triggered by a mobile phone went off in its carpark in 2005, while its premises were torched in 2012.
Defence Ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantrawanit said the government condemned the bomb attack and considered it a grave violation of human rights.
Southern Thailand has been rocked by near-daily shootings and bomb attacks for more than a decade as ethnic Malay rebels battle Thai troops in their quest for more autonomy from Bangkok. The fighting has claimed more than 6,500 lives since 2004, according to independent monitoring group Deep South Watch. It said that last month alone, there were 109 incidents and 21 deaths.
The separatist movement, founded on ethnicity and religion, has become increasingly violent since 2001.
Talks between the Thai junta and Mara Patani, an umbrella group claiming to represent the militants, began in 2015 but these have staggered along without any result. Barisan Revolusi Nasional, one of the insurgent groups, rejected Bangkok's peace plan last month and called for international observers and a neutral mediator to facilitate the talks.
But shortly before yesterday's attack, junta chief Prayut Chan-o-cha reiterated his opposition to foreign involvement in solving the festering conflict. "We must keep this issue away from the reach of the international arena," he told reporters in Bangkok.

FATAL SUPPER: SINGAPOREAN JUMPS FROM HIS HOTEL ROOM AFTER EATING ‘MAGIC MUSHROOMS’ IN BALI
BALI – A 23-year-old Singaporean has died after falling from his hotel room on Indonesia’s Bali island.
The student, identified by Indonesian media as Ong Chee Seng, reportedly fell from the Hotel Terrace in Badung, Bali, over the weekend.
Indonesian news site Tribun Bali reported on Monday that Mr Ong had reportedly eaten magic mushrooms – psilocybin mushrooms which have hallucinogenic effects – mixed with orange juice.

KAJANG – Closed circuit television (CCTV) footage depicting three workers at a restaurant here being physically abused, berated and humiliated by their employers and superiors has gone viral on social media, and triggered a police investigation.
The nearly seven minute-long video shows two diminutive young men and a petite woman being lined up and berated, shoved, slapped and punched by a co-worker at the behest of a large man believed to be their employer.

The scene, which unfolded in the busy kitchen of the Bandar Sungai Long restaurant over the weekend, is difficult to stomach and has horrified and outraged netizens far and wide.
None of the three abused staff – who appeared terrified throughout the ordeal – retaliated, but after the footage was leaked and went viral on the internet, one of them found the courage to lodge a police report, early today.
It is learnt that the victim sustained injuries from the abuse, and had to seek outpatient treatment at the Kajang Hospital.
Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Othman Nayan said police have identified two of the culprits in the incident, and arrests will be made once their current whereabouts are ascertained.
“Early investigation revealed that the incident took place on Saturday, at around 5.30pm, at a restaurant in Bandar Sungai Long here.
“According to (the female victim), she was slapped by two men, who also intimidated her with words. One of the men is the employer’s nephew.
“She said that she and the two other staff members were beaten by their superiors for failing to follow instructions – and that it was not the first time it had happened,” he said.
Othman added that the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

KUALA LUMPUR – Controversial investment scheme JJPTR founder Johnson Lee has finally made an appearance in public.
He appeared at a press conference facilitated by Gerakan, which featured 100 JJPTR investors with disabilities.
At the press conference, Lee declined to take questions from the press, but returned the investments of 10 of these people, saying he would fully the refund the other 90.
Several armed policeman were at the scene here at Jalan Ipoh on Wednesday, but they did not stop Lee from leaving.
JJPTR grabbed the headlines a few weeks ago when its 28-year-old founder claimed that the company had lost US$400mil (RM1.738mil) due to a purported “hacking job.”
