PETALING JAYA: A new ride-sharing option has been introduced in
Malaysia with oBike launched in the Klang Valley today, a Singapore news portal
reported.
The option to ride bicycles in the city may not seem appealing and
possibly dangerous, but according to the people behind the mobile app, it is
convenient if one wants to move over short distances.
“We developed oBike to provide a sustainable, convenient
short-distance transportation solution that will save people time and energy
while avoiding traffic jams in the Klang Valley,” oBike’s Ng Yong Ching was
quoted as saying by The Independent.
The oBike app wants to position itself as an option for short
distances that is “a more intelligent, convenient, and greener solution for
both inter and intra-city movement”.
According to the news portal, oBike’s entry into Malaysia is fast
considering the company had just launched its service in Singapore last
January.
The oBike app also intends to take advantage of being the first one
to launch such a service in Malaysia, that is ahead of Mobike and ofo, both of
which are China-based apps.
Going by the service provided in Singapore – the company has
distributed tens of thousands of bikes across the city – those who subscribe to
oBike will have to pay a one-time deposit fee of RM109.
Subsequently, the app will show the user where its bikes are
available around the city, and all a user has to do is to scan the QR Code to
get a number to unlock the bike. The rider will be charged RM1 for every 15
minutes’ use of the bike.
After taking the bike for a ride, the rider has to park it at a
public location, lock it to make it available for the next rider.
The company’s Facebook page will also be of help for those who need
help in finding the bike locations.
According to The Independent, oBike’s app is number one from Apple
Store among those residing in Singapore, while it is third on Google Play in
the city state.
