Iranian Man Sets Himself On Fire Outside Iranian Embassy In Bangkok

A man set himself on fire on Friday, the day of the presidential election in Iran, and attempted to run inside the Iranian Embassy in Bangkok while ablaze.

The flames engulfing the man,  identified as Ari Bayef, 40, were quickly extinguished  with the help of security guards from the embassy and passersby. But the man suffered several burns to his body and was taken to the nearby Camillian Hospital.

According to police, the man was standing across the street from the Iranian Embassy, located on Sukhumvit soi 49/11.

He was seen holding a sign that read “Don’t voted Iris,” along with three words that the police thought to be Arabic. He then shouted in a foreign language before dousing himself with petrol and setting himself alight with a lighter.

The investigation is ongoing, according to a local media.

Iranians on Friday voted in a fiercely contested presidential election in which the incumbent Hassan Rouhani is being challenged by populist Ebrahim Raisi.
