KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 — The case of a primary school student in Negri Sembilan who used his smartwatch to secretly record an English class that was not fully taught in the language and which latter forced the teacher to apologise has made headlines in the Chinese vernacular newspapers.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon responded saying the Negri Sembilan Education Department has been directed to investigate even though the ministry has yet to receive a formal complaint.

“The way the teacher apologised to the student is too horrible, this will not only harm the school spirit, but how will the teacher be able to continue teaching in front of the student?” he was quoted saying in Mandarin by Guang Ming Daily which frontpaged the news in a report today.

According to the daily, the incident happened at a Chinese vernacular primary school in Seremban.

The incident came to light after a Facebook post on it spread. The original poster had claimed that the teacher had not fully used English to teach an English language class, and that it had been recorded by a student using a smartwatch.

The Facebook post — which did not mention any names — also alleged that the student had passed on the recording to parents and the school principal and subsequently wanted the teacher to apologise, before adding that the teacher had no choice but to apologise to the student.

Chong was reported saying students dissatisfied with their lessons should provide feedback through proper channels instead of recording their classes furtively.

He was reported adding that parents could also complain to the schools or the Education Ministry.

He also noted that students are banned from bringing digital products to schools and that the ministry had only proposed that students be allowed to bring laptops with the intention that electronic goods would be used to supplement their studies, instead of for video or voice recording purposes.
