Honking driver in altercation says sorry
JOHOR BARU: The man whose repeated honking during Friday prayers led to last week’s altercation outside a surau here has made a public apology over his part in the incident.
Self-employed Toh Chai Eun, 28, apologised to the Muslim community here, especially those involved in the incident, which happened at around 1.30pm on May 5 outside the surau along Jalan Austin Perdana.
He issued the apology during a meeting at the Johor Islamic Religious Department office here yesterday.
Toh, who was wearing a neck brace, was accompanied by his brother Toh Chai Chung, 30.
Also present were surau committee members, state Islamic committee chairman Abd Mutalip Abd Rahim and Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAIJ) adviser Datuk Nooh Gadut.
“I was stuck on the road and had an important matter to attend to.
“I had no ill intention nor did I want to hurt anyone’s feelings,” Toh said in his statement, read out by his friend Mahadzir Abu Said.
Toh said his car was damaged in the ensuing commotion while he sustained injuries to his neck, legs and body, affecting his movement and speech.
“I hope that my apology will put an end to this incident,” he added.
Surau committee chairman Mohd Khaiidzir Ismail also wished to put the incident behind them and thanked those who set up the meeting between the two parties.
“We never expected things to get out of hand. We have taken several measures to ensure that there would not be a repeat,” he said.
Abd Mutalip said the meeting provided a platform for both sides to meet and “bring us back to the Malaysian spirit, especially in Johor.”
