tragedy: Woman pleads not guilty to causing death of teens
| March 28, 2017
Sam Ke Ting has claimed trial to a charge of
dangerous and reckless driving causing death.
PETALING JAYA: The driver who crashed into a
group of teenage cyclists in Johor last month has pleaded not guilty to a
charge of dangerous and reckless driving causing death.
Sam Ke Ting, 22, was charged under Section 41(1)
of the Road Transport Act 1987, The Star reported today.
The daily said Sam shook her head before
Magistrate Salina Omar when asked if she pleaded guilty after the charge was
read to her in Mandarin by a court translator.
On Feb 18, Sam ploughed into a group of 30 to 40
cyclists, killing eight and injuring eight others.
The cyclists, aged 13 to 17, were believed to
have been blocking some roads in the area.
The incident happened at 3am on Jalan Lingkaran
Dalam. Initial reports said Sam was neither drunk nor speeding at the time.
Police also denied that she was using her handphone while driving, as one of
the cyclists had claimed.
The Star said Sam was granted bail of RM10,000
with one surety. Meanwhile, her driving licence has been suspended and her
passport seized by the court, it said.
