PAP eyes 15 state seats in Penang

The party hopes to be effective in championing for the people who feel betrayed by BN and Pakatan
GEORGE TOWN: A third voice proponent of Malaysian politics expects four-cornered fights in most of the 13 parliament and 40 state seats in Penang in the next general election.
Despite efforts to woo Islamist party PAS by either Umno or the Opposition’s Pakatan Harapan alliance, People’s Alternative Party (PAP) vice-president Rahmad Isahak believes that multi-cornered fights will ensue.
“The friction and ideological differences are too large to ignore. And all the divisive politics is a reflection of how political parties have become. We are too split to stay committed to strategic partnerships,” said Rahmad.
“The ruling BN coalition is an exception, but they suffer from the perception that Umno is too dominant among them. Umno’s mileage has come at the expense of the likes of MCA, MIC and Gerakan as well as the parties in Sabah and Sarawak.”
Whereas in Pakatan, added Rahmad, there is no clear leader with each party DAP, PKR, Amanah and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, having different ways of doing things.
Topping that off is the coming election will also likely herald the arrival of the third voice parties who will get some measure of support because a large number of voters are now disillusioned with both BN and Pakatan.
Penang is one state where its inhabitants have a discerning mindset. They do not take kindly to accusations of bad governance and environment degradation.
“This give rises to the emergence of third voice candidates who feel that they can deliver a better government. So, expect third voice representatives to be present together with BN, Pakatan and PAS in most seats in Penang,” said Rahmad.
He also reminded that PAS has a non-Muslim council as core supporters, so it can also field non-Muslim candidates. Here is where PAP hopes to be effective, in championing for the people who feel were betrayed by BN and Pakatan.
People will be spoilt for choice
PAP remains firm in contesting for 15 state seats in Penang of which the majority of the voters in such seats are bumiputeras.
“We do not need to win many seats. Two wins is enough to send a message that the mainstream version of politics has failed the people.” said Rahmad.
When people crave change, they will execute it no matter how the dubious some of the candidates may be, said Rahmad, citing the US as an example, where its citizens voted in a brash real estate mogul, a novice on the political grand stage.
People will be spoilt for choice in the next election. Who they select would be important to demonstrate to the world whether Malaysians want progress or just be content with the present uncertainty as a permanent political landscape,
Asked for PAP’s take on the proposed RUU355 private member’s bill, which PAS’ president Abdul Hadi Awang wants to table to update the existing Shariah Criminal Enactments for Kelantan, Rahmad said it has become politicised until the original aims of it have become distorted.
“The bill is about upgrading the shariah punishment by-laws to reflect the realities facing the Muslims. It has nothing to do with the non-Muslims. Yet, some parties have decided to politicise it until the law became polemic.”
Certain things in life are simple but Malaysians complicate it to suit their political cravings, Rahmad said. PAP wants to incorporate policies which appeal to all Malaysians, and not just be content with fighting for a single demographic group.
In a way, PAP’s constitution is modelled after DAP, who has also proclaimed to champion all groups but still tends to settle for seats where Chinese are dominant.
So PAP’s niche is in seats where the Malays dominate the electorate. In the end, voters should possess the wisdom to decide who can best represent them, added Rahmad.
